This work was first performed by the Rascher Quartet in July 1995 at the Schleswig Holstein Festival in Hasselburg Germany. Paul Creston (1906-1985) was a well-known composer in his day who made rhythm the cornerstone of his work. Born to Italian immigrant parents in New York City he was essentially a self-taught composer because of poor family finances. He is especially recognized for his contributions to the literature of neglected instruments such as marimba trombone harp accordion and saxophone - such as this saxophone quartet.

During his long career Harvey was bass clarinet of the Scottish National Orchestra freelanced in London for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and many West End musicals as well as performing on many film and television recordingsessions. He was co-founder and leader of the Londong Saxophone Quartet and Professor of Clarinet at the Royal Military School of Music. He has been recognized for his contributions to the world of the clarinet. Among his many commissions is a work for Bass Clarinet Choir which was given its premiere by a choir of 149 bass clarinetists conducted by Harvey himself.

Roland Kernen has arranged the legendary Queen epic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' for Saxophone Quartet.
