The first piece is inspired by Psalm 102:1, “Hear my prayer, O Lord.†This piece is a passacaglia, which is a series of variations over a basso ostinato. It begins with a pleading theme played by the solo violin. An optional bridge connects to the next psalm. In the second piece, Alan takes his inspiration from Psalm 30:11, “You have turned my mourning into dancing.†This psalm is set as a tambourin and variants. A tambourin is a duple-meter dance of Provençal origin, often with a drum-like rhythm. The psalm concludes with a boisterous fiddler’s reel. .

Ed Eicker’s second offering to this series consists of eight pieces for solo piano. Psalm 27’s joyful theme is varied by several key changes. Psalm 47 is an exuberant, rhythmic prelude reminiscent of Copeland’s “Hoedownâ€. Psalm 63 is a passacaglia-a theme and variations over an ostinato bass. Psalm 66 is in 8/8 meter, but has accents on beats 1, 4, and 7, giving the accompaniment a playful feel. Psalm 91 begins with an expressive minor theme, which briefly changes to major before returning to a pleading tone. Psalm 104’s sparse melody is heightened with tempo changes and fermatas. Psalm 116’s theme is expressive and pleading. Psalm 146 is set in a swinging gospel style.   .

The first piece, Call to Worship and Dance, is inspired by Psalm 19, “He has pitched a tent for the sun, which comes forth like the groom from his bridal chamber.†This piece begins with evocative figures before moving to a syncopated dance. In the second piece, Kate takes her inspiration from Psalm 110. Psalm 121, “I will lift up my eyes†consists of long, arching phrases.  Psalm 126, “Our mouths were filled with laughter†is another dance. Kate depicts the laughter with a highly chromatic melody and harmonic shifts. The concluding psalm is Psalm 131, “I have stilled my soul, like a weaned child on its mother’s lap, so is my soul within me.â€Â .

The first piece is a meditation inspired by Psalm 46, “Be still and know that I am God.†The music alternates between rich harmonies and silence. The berceuse based on Psalm 131, “My whole being is at rest in you, my God†is a gentle lullaby with a large arching melody.   .

The first piece is inspired by Psalm 138:2, “I will bow down toward your temple and I will praise your name.†This piece begins with a meditative motif that builds gently, while underscored by a steady, suppliant piano accompaniment. Psalm 84, “How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts.†is set as a processional dance, beginning with a bold statement with a middle-east feel. A constant accelerando keeps the dance moving along with dotted rhythms, glissandi, and open intervals.
