Four Short Prayers of Saint Francis of Assisi were introduced to Poulenc by his nephew Jerome, a Franciscan monk, who asked the composer to set them to music. Poulenc found these prayers very inspirational, as he was deeply moved spiritually and at the same time intimidated by the Saint's humility.Robert Kalwas has done a marvelous job arranging these four short works (timing is about 7-8 minutes) for a sextet or 6-part ensemble of Trombones. All parts are in bass clef. This arrangement will work nicely for moderately advanced.

Vocal/Chorus ScoreFor vocal quartet, piano trio, and clarinet, in five movements, sets the text of the Cantico delle Creature (Canticle of Creation) by St. Francis of Assisi (1181/82-1226), one the first extant writings in Italian (Umbrian) dialect rather than the official Latin. Many composers have set it to music, including Franz Liszt, William Walton, and Amy Beach. The first movement praises the Almighty, the second natural elements such as wind, fire, and water, the third ponders death and sickness, the fourth is an ode to earth that sustains life and its flowers that provide beauty, and the last returns to praising the Lord and reiterating the message of humility dear to St. Francis. Throughout the work, passages from the traditional Prayer of St. Francis/Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace interject their own commentary, meditating on topics such as forgiveness, consolation, and harmony. S, MS, T, B soli, Clarinet, Violin, Violoncello & Piano Duration: 28’ Composed: 2014 Published by: Michele Caniato Music.

Bret Hesla was inspired to write an SATB choral setting of Pope Francisâs A Prayer for Our Earth, which speaks to the climate emergency and our call to respond as people of faith. Zach Busch further arranged the score and created the piano accompaniment. The text is set in six short movements which convey the character of each prayer petition. The movements can be sung as a whole, individually, or in pairings, and could be interspersed with spoken prayers, psalms, or other liturgical elements.

Three Sound-Poems after Paintings by Andreas Willscher (2017) are dedicated to organist Philip Hartmann and the art-loving community of the Pauluskirche in Ulm, Germany. The music is inspired by three paintings by German composer (and artist) Andreas Willscher (b. 1955). The pieces take their musical shapes and colors from the specific details of the paintings. The three paintings represent different styles: a landscape, a religious theme, and an abstract. The first movement, Sonnenfeld (Sun Field), is inspired by a bright painting of the sun illuminating the green field behind the composer's small house in Sainte-Radegonde (Dordogne/Perigord, France). A resplendent and majestic section of full sun harmonies surrounds a middle section with more motion. The second movement, Gebet des Hl. Franziskus (Prayer of St. Francis), is inspired by a painting showing St. Francis of Assisi in prayer. Francis has been a frequent theme in Willscher's music since his appointment at a young age as organist of St. Francis Church in Hamburg. The third movement, Laetare (Rejoice), is inspired by an vibrant abstract painting comprised of bold colors. The alternation of the blocks of rich color are mirrored in the block harmonic shifts in the movement, which is a moto perpetuo, building towards the organ's fullest sounds. The “Prayer of St. Francis” calls us to respond to inhumanity with humanity habitually as a movement towards peace. Opening with a dissonant cry for good will, the singers sing a series of entreaties, and the piano carries them over gently undulating quadruplets. The music flows freely till its final cadence.
