New Hampshire is part of the greater region of New England in the north-east of the United States. The introduction to this work is inspired on the nickname of New Hampshire, ‘The Granite State’, which refers to the extensive granite formations and stone quarries. We further explore this beautiful state through Market Square in Portsmouth, the nature park Franconia Notch, and the Kancamagus Highway. The work closes in a grand manner, with a bow to one of the most beautiful of all American states.New Hampshire maakt deel uit van de grotere regio New England in het noordoosten van de Verenigde Staten. Geoffrey Burgon's Six Studies were originally composed for solo cello. This transcription, authorised by the composer, has involved some changes in register and notes due to the different timbres and response of the viola and the considerable difference in physical size of the two instruments. This work was commissioned by the Portsmouth Festival with funds provided by Southen Arts. The first performance was given by Julian Lloyd Webber at the Cathedral Church of Old Portsmouth in June 1980.

This volume reflects two aspects of Lord Berners' work. Firstly his solo piano pieces from the period of the First World War, and secondly the applied music for films, plays or ballets of his later years. His genuine gifts were immediately recognised by Stravinsky and Casella, although from 1934 moved towards writing and painting. The quality of his music makes him a colourful figure in British music.

About William Walton Edition
In March 2014 Oxford University Press published the last volume in its magnificent William Walton Edition, the only complete critical edition of a 20th-century British composer's oeuvre. All 24 volumes are handsomely printed and bound. Walton's entire output is now available to scholars and performers in a definitive and fully practical edition, based on the form in which the composer ultimately wished his music to be performed. The general editor, David Lloyd-Jones - the eminent conductor, English music specialist, and founder of Opera North - invited a world-class expert to edit each volume. Carefully researched introductory essays place the works in their historical context and in the composer's oeuvre, and there are full critical notes.
