From the composer: “Polish Folk Songs was inspired by music I heard on a trip I took to Zakopane, a town that is located a the foot of the Tatra Mountains in Southern Poland. I was completely taken by the music of the region, which can be characterized as clear, mournful, unpredictable in tempo and meter, and of vibrant timbre. In my composition I have taken a number of the songs commonly heard in the area and re-combined them, allowing them to bump heads as well as interact peacefully.†In three movements, Polish Folk Songs was commissioned by Catherine and Paul Buttenweiser for Boston Musica Viva, who premiered it in May of 2007. This collection of 10 Polish Folk Songs on Soldier Themes by Witold Lutoslawski, originally intended for male choir a cappella, was written in 1951. The score was published that same year by the Ministry of Defence Publishers in the series Biblioteka Muzyczna DomuWojska Polskiego no. 31. Some of the songs (numbers 4, 5, 6) were also published by PWM Edition in Krakow (1945) in the collection Pod jaworem (Under the Sycamore Tree) - a selection of Polish folk songs arranged for male choir a cappella, edited by Jozef K. Lasocki. 10 Polish Folk Songs... together with the 1951 cycle of four songs (Wyszlabym ja, Sluzba Polsce, Zelazny marsz and Naprzod idziemy) and the nine-bar Lord Tennyson Song written many years later (as an occasional gift for Robin Boyle) are the only songs written for a cappella choir by Witold Lutoslawski. Numerous questions from famous choral conductors from home and abroad persuaded me to undertake to make this edition of 10 Polish Folk Songs... for mixed choir a cappella. Kolja Lessing dedicates this recording to Krzysztof Meyer on the occasion of the composer's eightieth birthday in 2023. Meyer, one of the most important Polish composers of his generation, taught for many years as professor of composition at the Cologne College of Music and numbers among the important bridge-builders between Polish and German cultural life. As a pupil of Krzysztof Penderecki and Nadia Boulanger, he remarkably manages to integrate important communicative elements into an avant-garde musical language of great suggestive power and narrative charm. In the works written over a period of more than 40 years, Meyer proves himself to be an expert with profound knowledge of the technical possibilities of the violin. Kolja Lessing and Rainer Maria Klaas's interpretations, developed with the composer, captivate by means of their authenticity, by dint of their deep understanding of a music that is both expressive and euphonious, and through which a distinguished, deeply humanistic personality speaks.

O Radix Jesse by Polish composer Pawe ukaszewski , is arranged here for unaccompanied SSAA Chorus with divisions. Pawe ukaszewski is part of a younger generation of Polish composers who specialise in sacred and choral music. After studying composition and receiving two Ph.Ds, ukaszewski 's work has been performed throughout Europe and the rest of the world. This composition, O Radix Jesse is a setting of the Magnificant antiphons used in Christian advent and Catholic Mass. The haunting harmonies created by the unaccompanied chorus in this composition are sure to remain with audiences for a long time, having been intricately crafted by this master ofspiritual music. Please note that the lyrics are in Latin. David Lindley, in the September 2015 issue of the Organists' Review, writes that ukaszewski's music is often compared to that of Gorecki, Part and John Tavener, and this piece manifests the family resemblance..

Two Composers, Four Hands by Roxanna Panufnik is a 15-minute work for double string orchestra. It was commissioned to celebrate the centenaries of two of Poland's most eminent 20th century composers: Witold Lutolawski (2013) and Roxanna Panufnik's father, Andrzej Panufnik (2014). The three movements are titled Lutolawski, Panufnik and LutoPanufski. The first two movements capture the musical essence of each composer and the third remembers affectionately the famous piano duo the two composers formed in Warsaw, during the Second World War with variations on a humorous Polish folk song A Posla niewiasta (from the Kraków region).
The work was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland within the programme Collections--the priority Composers' Commissions implemented by the Institute of Music and Dance. The first performance took place on 15 December 2013 at the Philharmonic Concert Hall, Wroclaw, by the Wroclaw Chamber Orchestra Leopoldinum, conducted by Ernst Kovacic.
The full score (EP 72496) is available for sale as part of the Peters Contemporary Library. The performance material can be hired. This product is Printed on Demand and may take several weeks to fulfill. Please order from your favorite retailer.

Edmund Severn (1862–1942) was an American composer and violinist. Born in England, he studied in various cities including Berlin and composed works for unaccompanied violin, orchestra and string quartet. “Polish Dance†is his best-known work. Written in the style of a mazurka, it is an invitation to this dance form with its distinctive local colour. Many ritardandos and rubatos add rhythmic spice; wide leaps, double stops and three-note chords ensure delightful melodic and harmonic turns. Expressive dynamics provide the necessary vim to this “Polish Danceâ€!

Essays by Tomasz Baranowski, Andrzej Chwalba, Stephen Downes, Peter Franklin, Stefan Keym, Ryszard D. Golianek, Agata Mierzejewska, Michael Murphy, Jadwiga Paja-Stach, Luca Sala, Renata Suchowiejko, Emma Sutton, Andrzej Tuchowski, Alistair Wightman, James L. ZychowiczIn this volume I aim to examine the figure of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz in the broader sociocultural context which fostered his work. The attempt to contextualize an immense intellectual patrimony -- despite being restricted to a tiny number of works when compared to more prolific authors, especially in the context of the xix and the xx centuries -- is always a complex and hazardous task. My primary intention in organizing the volume has been to explicate Karlowicz the man as well as Karlowicz the composer, against the complex background of the European fin-de-siecle. The various essays aim to present the reader with an exhaustive reconstruction of Karlowicz's intellectual work. Karlowicz's oeuvre offers a broad artistic portrayal of Poland at the end of the nineteenth century as a fast-evolving country, politically divided and filled with contradictions. Hence the necessity to investigate the fin-de-siecle context with its social and historical implications, showing the influence of the European cultural milieu on the composer's poetics and on his thought. We shall examine the spectrum of relationships and affinities linking Karlowicz's works to the Polish cultural world (on the wave of the rising 'autochthonous' avant-garde movements) and to the wider cultural life pulsating beyond its borders, with special reference to German Wagnerism and Symphonism. Essentially, we are striving to define the uniqueness of his oeuvre, which -- in relation to the manifold influences co-existing in Poland, an insubstantial nation from the political viewpoint and divided along three socio-cultural fronts -- could be defined as distinctively Polish, yet ultimately European. (Luca Sala).

These lovely settings of three Polish Christmas carols include good opportunities for teaching style and musicality as you prepare for your winter performance. While ?Three Polish Carols? is meant to be performed as a complete suite, directors have the additional security of knowing they can present any of the three pieces as stand alone arrangements if necessary.
