5 Pieces for Cello and Piano

These four pieces for Cello and Piano accompaniment were composed separately between the years 1901 and 1910 and appeared in print in several different versions ranging from piano solo to full orchestra. They were all primarily written however for cello and piano so appear here in their original form. The editor - Julian Lloyd Webber - has been responsible for the addition of bowings and fingerings.

Op 102-Although Schumann had learnt the cello for a while in his youth he only began to compose for this instrument in later life. Apart from the cello concerto only his Five Pieces op. 102 have survived as original works for thecello. Clara was delighted with them: 'These are pieces in folk style with such a freshness and originality that I was enchanted'. The 'Neue Zeitschrift für Musik' wrote: 'These pieces are less apt for a virtuoso player than awell versed one who can speak on his instrument with tone and meaning.' On The Fiddle consists of three pieces derived from scores to three Peter Greenaway films. The first piece Full Fathom Five is a version of the Shakespeare song setting made for Prospero'sBooks (1990).The second Angelfish Decay is an arrangement of an arrangement: the music for the speeded up time lapse decaying animal sequences in A Zed And Two Noughts (1985) was written for twoviolins and a harpsichord. This was subsequently 'reduced' to a violin solo for Zoo Caprices (1986). For On The Fiddle a piano part has been added.The final piece Miserere Paraphrase was writtenfor use in The Cook The Thief His Wife And Her Lover (1989) and is a transcription of Nyman's setting of the 'Miserere' text (Psalm 51) sung in the film by a boy soprano and mixed chorus.This version for celloand piano written in 1997. 18 Recital Pieces in First Position for Cello and Piano or Two Celli-Charming collections of easy pieces in first position. Each Cello part is supported by a Piano accompaniment for student performances. Alternately a second Cello part allows duo playing with the teacher during lessons. This early introduction to chamber music brings joy and satisfaction to the young cellist and teaches the student to hear the music as a whole. The two volumes are designed as companion publications to the Early Start on the Cello method. However they work equally well as a supplement to any other Cello method. A variety of rarely published works by well-known cellists and pedagogues such as Wilhelm Fitzenhagen HugoSchlemüller and August Nölck make these publications attractive to teachers and students. The Cello Recital Album Volume 1 can be used as a supplement to the Early Start on the Cello method Volumes 1 and 2 (BA 8996 and BA 8997). The 18 pieces in Volume 1 are structured to follow the same progression of finger patterns introduced in the Early Start method. This systematic progression helps the student to solidify the hand position and improve intonation. The basic bowing techniques do not require changes in bow speed or sounding point.
