Piano Sextet Op. 110

Twelve Astrological Preludes were written over a period of roughly two years and several were broadcast on BBC Radio 2's Friday Night is Music Night as well as in other concerts. Aquarius was written in 1994 as a filler to a popular BBC solo piano series of the time called At the Piano. It was named Aquarius for programming purposes and as Elms left the studio the producer called after him 'Only eleven to go' and so Twelve Astrological Preludes came into being.The preludes which run in the usual cycle are based upon two melodic strands and there is one piece in each of the twelve major keys. The character and style of each prelude alludes to certaincharacter traits of its particular birth sign and each piece bears the initials of a friend born under that particular sign. Each prelude is prefaced by a printed description of some of the general characteristics deemed to be associated with that sign. These are of course generalisations! Some preludes show a little deference to some of my favourite 'masters'.Elms has recorded Twelve Astrological Preludes for the Herald label and they are available on the CD Moody Moves together with other pieces of his chamber music including the piano sextet from which the CD takes its name. We know this from at least two sets of handwritten parts which were then in circulation.No Piano part has been handed down; indeed the original sets of parts probably omitted the Piano.The soloist presumably studied his part from the first edition of the solo part published with the original performance material in 1808. (The full score did not appear until 1861).The sextetversion deftly integrates the original wind parts into the string texture. The arrangement stands in the tradition of Piano reductions with chamber music accompaniment of the sort which were also made for Mozart’s Piano concertos K.413 to 415 and later for the Chopin concertos.This Urtext edition edited by the renowned Beethoven scholar Jonathan Del Mar presents this arrangement for the first time in print. The musical text is supplemented by an informative Introduction and a Critical Commentary.First ever publication of this arrangement.Includes a separate solo part as was customary in Beethoven’s day.Provides new possibilities for soloists to perform this work.

Piano-Bent Sørensen THE SHADOWS OF SILENCE For piano Programme Note The Shadows of Silence (2003-2004)Quite some time ago I heard - through a conversation in a mobile phone - a wonderful concert of ringing church bells from an European capital. I found it very hard to concentrate about the conversation because I was so engrossed by the chaotic world of bell sound. The night after I dreamt that the sound of those low singing bells was rising up from a piano in a huge empty concert hall. That experience became the starting point for my piano piece 'The Shadows of Silence'. But before the piece gets to the ringing bells itmoves through a landscape of shadows - Shadows of the silence before the bells - Silence before the storm - Shadows of melodies which all the time leaves traces even in the short passages of storm. After the passage with the low ringing bells the shadows of silence returns melted in to a lament which are sending two regards. One to two small beautiful - not very well known - bars by Mozart and one to the sextet in my own opera 'Under the Sky'.'The Shadows of Silence' was commissioned by The Carnegie Hall Corporation and is dedicated to Leif Ove Andsnes
