Piano Quartet E-Flat Major, Op. 87

Par DVORAK ANTONIN. For several years following composition of his first piano quartet, Dvorák?s publisher Simrock pushed him to compose a follow-up piece in the genre. The work, written during a few short weeks in summer 1889, fulfilled Simrock?s wishes. With his op. 87, Dvorák delivered a challenging and mature work in which a mastery of form is combined with memorable themes and surprising harmonic turns, leading it quickly to conquer the hearts of both performers and audiences. ?In the evening we played Robert?s E-Flat Major Quartet for the first time ? and I was once again truly delighted at this beautiful and so youthful work? enthused Clara Schumann in 1842. Inpreparation for this work Schumann had studied String quartets by the Viennese Classical composers. This is why all of the parts in the quartet are treated equally forming a splendid ensemble. Our edition has anextensive critical commentary on account of the difficult source situation. The fold-out page in the Cello part was designed with music practice in mind. The Piano Quartet and the Piano quintet op. 44 referred toas ?sister works? were both composed in Schumann?s ?chamber music year?. For this reason we were publishing them both in the 2006 ?Schumann Year?.

E flat major-The Concerto For Alto Saxophone And Orchestra is Alexander Glazunov’s last work; since its first performance in 1934 it has become part of the standard Saxophone repertoire. The sole surviving autograph manuscript is the hand-written dedication score given by Glazunov to Sigurd Raschèr (Raschèr was the founder and leader of the well-known and innovative Raschèr Saxophone Quartet).This score contains the original version of the work without the alterations which were made in the proofs to the orchestral score as well as the full version of the composer’s cadenza which was later shortened. The autograph manuscript also containssome performance markings by Raschèr.The correspondence between Raschèr and Glazunov documents the composer’s thoughts on the work and his recommendations about the size of the accompanying String Orchestra. Evidence from this correspondence has been integrated into this edition.This first scholarly-critical edition of a work by Glazunov contains an informative introduction with commentaries about the history of its composition facsimiles and a critical commentary.The solo part includes both the complete and the shortened version of the cadenza as well as a cadenza by Raschèr which the composer authorised.- Includes the original and new solo cadenzas.- With helpful performance tips by Carina Raschèr the daughter of Sigurd Raschèr.- With an Urtext solo Saxophone part and a second part prepared by Carina Raschèr.- Informative foreword (Ger/Eng).- Full score & performance material (BA8732) and Saxophone & Piano reduction (BA8732-90) available for sale.

This piece was originally written for Violin and Piano and if the 'New World' Symphony and the 'American' String Quartet are the best-known products of Anton n Dvorak's years in the United States the little Sonatina in G major(sometimes called the 'Indian Lament' Sonatina) may well be the most obscure; yet it is a charming work that deserves better than its relegation to the learning books of young violinists. The Sonatina is in four movements:Allegro risoluto Larghetto Scherzo (molto vivace) and Allegro. The first movement's principal tune has a firm rhythmic spine its second tune a gentle plaintiveness; there is just a hint of Americanfolk music in the movement.The following Larghetto earned the Sonatina its nickname. The succession of its three melodies - one in G minor one in B flat major and one in G major - has to it the same wistfulness and thesame sudden brightening and then softening of mood that we hear in the famous slow movement of the 'New World' Symphony.The Scherzo takes the very first gesture of the Allegro risoluto as its starting-point. The finale isa substantial sonata-allegro movement with three wonderful themes: the opening syncopated idea in G major a subsidiary thought in E minor very dancelike and built around a repeating marcato cell and finally a rich tranquillomelody that closes the exposition. This adaptation for Flute and Piano by James Galway conveys all the spirit of the original.

After preparing his Scenes historiques op. 66 for print in spring 1912, Sibelius had many grand plans but had to turn towards more profitable piano works first, due to his financial situation. Within only one month, he wrote the Three Sonatinas op. 67 in June 1912, which were published by Breitkopf already in November the same year. Although by his own accounts he did not like writing for piano and only doing it for income, he told in 1948 Erik Tawaststjerna that he regarded the Sonatinas among his best chamber music and considered them equal to his string quartet ?Voces intimae?. / Date parution : 2022-11-04/ Recueil / Piano
