Giuseppe Concone (1801-1861) was an Italian singing master pianist and composer. He wrote several volumes of vocal exercises which won world-wide recognition for their usefulness. These legato studies with their long phrases are ideal for developing a good tone on the bassoon. The bassoon generally plays a modest supporting role in the orchestra but there are occasions when it is given a solo and what is needed is a full golden sound. Time on thesestudies will not only make these moments shine but will also develop good support and control of all legato playing right down to the secure and rounded pianissimo.

Fanfares and Love Songs was commissioned by the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain for performance on 25th July 2009. Its three movements contrast the extrovert and lyrical qualities of the traditional brass band. The fanfare with which the work opens involves the whole cornet section. The second movement is reflective in mood beginning somewhat pensively on muted brass and building to an emotional climax before subsiding back to a distant pianissimo chord. The finale is a fast dance which with a final recapitulation of the opening fanfare drives on to a breathless close.Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rdSection Duration: 12 minutes

Description The 'Sonata d'arpeggione' was originally written for the guitarre d'amour or arpeggione - a kind of enlarged guitar that could be bowed cello-style. The instrument did not survive longer than a few years, but this piece by Schubert is a lovely reminder. This edition is transcribed for flute by James Galway and edited by Phillip Moll for the Great Performer's Edition series. The opening Allegro Moderato is built around a wistful melody. A second theme proceeds in gentle gusts of semiquavers (the arpeggione could not play fast notes with much volume at all, and so the Sonata's quicker portions are almost always marked piano or pianissimo). The Adagio is a rich but introverted musing on an almost hymn-like subject, at the end Schubert invites the soloist to improvise a brief transition into the final, multi-sectioned Allegretto . Par FLAMENT NATALIA. Pendant mes années d'enseignement avec Natalia Flament au CRR de Paris, j'ai apprécié son engagement et sa connaissance de la danse classique. Nous avons recherché ensemble la plus juste harmonie entre le mouvement de danse et la phrase musicale. Chaque exercice à la barre comme au centre possédait son propre caractère : sensibilité, poésie, nuances, dynamiques, couleurs, puissance grâce à la capacité de Natalia de traduire les mouvements chorégraphiques en phrase musicale. Les retenues, les résonances, les accents, les anacrouses étaient en parfaite liaison avec mes explications et mes exigences de qualité de mouvement. La diversité de son accompagnement donnait à chaque cours une ambiance particulière. Le travail avec Natalia à mon sens n'a pu se faire qu'avec une grande complicité et compréhension émotionnelle. Yannick Stéphant Le travail des exercices au milieu - l'avant-goût de la scène! - demande une attention particulière de la part du pianiste-accompagnateur, car pour les élèves c'est en quelque sorte 'un moment de vérité'. Toutes les acquisitions techniques et artistiques à la barre sont misent à l'épreuve : la recherche de l'en dehors, la tenue d'un équilibre, la position du regard, les directions des pas... Il n'y a plus le soutien fidèle de la barre et tous les mouvements de la danse doivent être gérés dans l'espace ! Cette notion de l'espace ne doit absolument pas être négligée par le pianiste : les phrases musicales prennent davantage de volume, s'étalent sur plusieurs octaves (comme un peintre qui change son pinceau pour un plus large!), les marches harmoniques font leurs variations selon les changements de direction du mouvement... C'est aussi le moment où le travail raffiné des nuances pianistiques devient un vrai soutien pour les danseurs. Certaines exagérations dynamiques sont les bienvenues voire récompensées : la délicatesse du pianissimo pour adoucir la réception au sol, l'amplification du crescendo au moment des grands sauts en diagonale pour renforcer un élan, les retenues (ritenuto) au moment des rotations en pirouettes pour donner une assurance... Bref, un vrai dialogue et la complicité artistique s'installe entre les danseurs et leur pianiste dont le travail est mis en valeur par les splendides mouvements de la danse.
