Full score: WH31186 Orch. parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk Preface / Programme Note When introducing a large-scale symphonic work not only as a symphony but as an organ symphony it would be impossible not to think of and perhaps compare it with Camille Saint-Saëns’s famous SYMPHONY NO. 3 popularly known as the Organ Symphony. Well that is a risk I am prepared to take – and live with the consequences.Saint-Saëns however listed his work as a symphony avec/withorgan. The organ only appears in two out of the four sections of thepiece. In my symphony the instrument plays a far more significant part and is featured in all four movements. But it is not a concerto for organ and orchestra rather a symphony with organo obligato - a symphony with an organ part of a soloistic nature. So an Organ Symphony it is. The first movement PRELUDE is exactly that: a foreplay to what is in store for the rest of the symphony. It is slow (very slow!) and predominantly hushed: the organ and the orchestra wake up side-by-side getting to know one another.The second movement CORTÈGE is a slowly moving processional and it evokes extreme solemnity and austerity. Later on the music takes flight and the atmosphere lightens considerably a far more playful music emerging.This leads to the third movement ETUDE an exercise in instrumental virtuosity and technical challenge.The fourth and last movement is called CHACONNE but I could just as well have named it passacaglia (the definition of those two terms seems to blur even among the learned). Bearing in mind the last movement of Johannes Brahms´s SYMPHONY NO.4 which is universally agreed on as being a passacaglia I chose to avoid the Wrath of the Gods and opted for

Le manuscrit d?signe le clavecin comme instrument soliste pourtant diff?rents crit?res semblent indiquer clairement que l??uvre ?tait destin?e ? l?orgue. Ce concerto fait partie despetits concertos faciles ? jouer avec accompa-gnement de cordes.

Lemare’s compositions are uneven in quality but the best are still active in the repertoire. The Toccata di Concerto is certainly full of fireworks and has the capacity to show the abilities of a great Organ. The upper parts have plenty of French toccata style but the theme in the pedals gives the piece substance as does the romantic chromatic interlude in the middle of the work.Organ virtuoso and composer Edwin Lemare was the world’s highest-paid Organist at the height of his career in the early 1900’s drawing bravos from ctritics and the crowds who queued around the block to hear this most famous of Organists. After having served as a church Organist for a relativelyshort period he began the life of a travelling recitalist beginning with a hundred-recital tour of the USA and Canada in 1900 a career that continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Lemare was also virtuosic in his ability to transcribe great Orchestral works for the Organ allowing audiences in those less urban times to hear works played live that they might have heard no other way.

Organ or Mixed Choir or Orchestra-Unlike Handelâ??s other Organ concertos HWV 292 is not a transcription of a work for a different solo instrument but was conceived from the outset as part of the oratorio Athalia.Its fourth movement leads seamlessly into a Hallelujah chorus that was only later replaced by an Adagio ending for publication purposes. Thanks to the relative simplicity of the chorus our volume makes a useful addition to the material already published for this concerto (BA 8344).Original version of movement no. 4 from Organ Concerto HWV 292.Effective and easy to perform.For four-voice mixed chorus.
