Par HUMMEL BERTOLD. The overall form of this work in one movement is in seven sections. A slow introduction begins with multiphonics of the saxophone and sounds of cymbals played with a double-bass bow. Vibraphone and marimbaphone provide the chordal foundation for a fanfare-like invocation by the saxophone. The atmosphere of the following Allegro is dominated by an ostinato series of notes taken from the chords of the introduction and played by the marimbaphone - over this, starting from a four-note series, the saxophone develops jazz-influenced figures. The constructional elements are worked into a cadenza-like section, followed by an arioso passage, leading over lightly-pulsating sounds to a final climax with a B-A-C-H (B flat - A - C - B) quotation in the saxophone. Once again, it continues with a cadenza-like section. Slap in the saxophone and stopped notes in the vibraphone and marimbaphone introduce new ideas and sonorities for discussion, the constructional elements are played off against each other in a loose sequence. At the end of this second cadenza, the B-A-C-H (B flat - A - C - B) quotation re-appears in the saxophone. A varied reprise of the first Allegro section leads to a concluding passage, taking up the atmosphere of the introduction, combined however with clear references to the four-note series of the Allegro. The interval of a third is heard and remains hovering in the air to the very end, closing the work in pianissimo./ Répertoire / Saxophone Soprano et Percussions

This work, which lasts about eight minutes, is conceived from one thematic idea. It explores the technical recources as well as the rich tonal colours of the wind band. It is suitable both for concerts competitions. Bertold Hummel was a pupil of Harald Genzmer.

At funeral or memorial services and ceremonies, the traditional, slowly marching funeral music, the Tombeau, still plays an important musical role today. In most cases, such musics were created for a specific occasion, like the death of a prince or an artist. That was the case with this Tombeau for wind orchestra, too: Bertold Hummel wrote it after the death of a fellow composer and friend.Hummel was not afraid of expressing his feelings in a wistfully nostalgic funeral music full of tonal beauty which is close to the musical language of the 19th century with regard to form and harmony. In addition to the score and parts, our edition of this moving piece also contains the particell with which Hummel put down the Tombeau on paper in 1998.

Best playability and musical spirit - this is what characterizes the music of Bertold Hummel who died in 2002, and why his music must be part of the repertoire of any amateur and semi-professional orchestra. The 'Oregon Symphony' occupies a special position in his oeuvre: it was written by Hummel for the typically American symphonic wind bands, requiring almost 100 musicians, including 15 clarinets in three groups of five alone, as well as four piccolos and six flutes, bass clarinet, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, tubas and the typically American sousaphone, and five percussionists. The work consists of four movements; in the rousing finale, Hummel mixes jazz motifs with popular themes and even weaves the anthem of the State of Oregon in the final music. For getting better acquainted with this music, the first movement is also separately available ('Symphonische Ouverture', SHS 1001).Picc. * 2 * 2 * Klar. in Es * 3 * Bassklar. in B * 2 Altsax. in Es * Tenorsax. in B * Baritonsax. in Es * 2 - 4 * 3 (Korn.) * 3 * Tenorhr. in B (Bar.)

Although Bertold Hummel composed this Scherzo for bassoon and chamber orchestra more than fifty years ago, the piece still captivates every listener with its youthful, carefree liveliness. Virtuoso and witty, it does justice to its title in every respect. It was created in 1957 upon commission of the Kleines Unterhaltungsorchester Sudwestfunk Baden-Baden. The solo part of the four-minute concert piece with the tempo indication 'allegro molto' was tailor-made by Hummel for the orchestra's principal bassoonist Helmut Boker. In addition to the hire material, a piano score with solo part is now available on sale.

When it was possible to celebrate the Catholic Mass in the German language as well, Bertold Hummel wrote his motet Ehre sei Gott for mixed four-part choir. This piece is a 'German gloria' and can be performed liturgically in a Mass.Hummel follows traditional examples: The text, full of contrasts, is redesigned - sentence by sentence - with new musical ideas. In doing so, he reveals his extraordinary ability to write easy-to-sing music of high quality which delights choirs and listeners alike. The six-minute piece was premiered at the Cathedral of Wurzburg. The present new edition also contains a singable translation in English.

(Christoph Weinhart 2015).
