This critical edition of the Petite Suite is an excerpt from the COMPLETE WORKS OF CLAUDE DEBUSSY, Series I, volume 9. The titles of the movements of the Petite Suite, 'Cortege' and 'Ballet', evoke the universe of both the Premiere Suite d'orchestreand Fetes galantes by Paul Verlaine ('Cortege' and 'En bateau'), several poems from which Debussy began to set as early as 1882.The contract that Debussy signed with the editors Durand, Schoenewerk & Cie for the Petite Suite is dated 8 December 1888. The work appeared at the beginning of the following year; the 'depot legal', (legal deposit) of the work, was accomplished on12 February 1889. It is difficult to believe that the Petite Suite, which became one of Durand's bestselling items during the composer's lifetime, was at first not appreciated by those who heard it.

One of the goals of the present edition is to narrow the gap between the full score and the piano reduction, in respect of the philosophy of the Oeuvres completes to offer the composer's final version. As a particular aid to singers (and students), thematic material, especially when it involves the musical motives associated with the principal characters, was added, usually in small notes, when it had not figured in the composer's own reduction. Rehearsal pianists may elect to omit such additions. Moreover, the numerous editions and reprints of the vocal score allowed Debussy ample opportunity to revise the voice parts to his satisfaction and if he chose to do so, adopt readings from the full score. The main source of the voice parts is the 1907 French-English vocal score or its revision. The present musical text comes from Oeuvres completes de Claude Debussy, Series VI, volume 2 ter.

This new, completely revised and reset centenary edition of Satie’s complete piano music in three volumes has returned to Satie’s manuscripts and first editions to give pianists completely accurate and reliable texts to play from.As well aspresenting every piece for piano solo or piano reduction that Satie published, this edition also includes some previously unknown pieces, like the Petite Sonate that he wrote for Vincent d’Indy at the Schola Cantorum, as well as some interestingfirst versions of well-known pieces, like San Bernardo, a trial version of Españaña (1913) and the markedly different first version of Les Pantins dansent (1914). In addition, there areexamples of the different types of exercises that Satie completedat the Schola between 1905 and 1912, some extra trial Enfantines, and some earlier drafts of his famous Sports et divertissements. To help pianists, suggested metronome marks have been added throughout, and there are also some performance suggestionsfor the Rose Croix pieces of the 1890s, which otherwise appear to be all quiet and slow. The notation has been made as user-friendly as possible, without detracting from Satie’s concerns about the “extériorisation†of his musical thought in print.
