Rheinberger's string quartets, his string quintet and his nonet for winds and strings were often performed and were very successful works during his lifetime. Their density, but also the delicateness of the scherzo movements are in the tradition of Schumann and Mendelssohn and these traits are combined with Rheinberger's sense for the clear, defined structure of the movements and solid contrapuntal writing. The octet for winds and strings is published here for the first time and the nonet, which is actually a reworking of this octet that Rheinberger undertook some twenty years later, is also published in this volume. Rheinberger made major changes from the original octet and he added two new movements to the nonet. Both works show especially the interest and pleasure which he derived from the variety in the differentiation of colors in ensemble playing. The Thema mit Veranderungen op. 93, which until now has been known as a work for string quartet, is published here with the double bass part which Rheinberger later added.

Bach's Fantasia & Fugue in C minor, BWV 537 is a work for Organ written around the year 1723 while the composer was in residence in Weimar.Bach composed many of his greatest organ works during this period. The music of the Fantasia is lush and ornate. The Fugue is an amazing 130 bars in length. This work was transcribed for orchestra in 1921 by Edward Elgar who mourned after the death of his wife. He was to orchestrate the Fugue and Richard Strauss agreed to do the Fantasia, however after two years Elgar completed the entire work as Strauss never held up his part of the bargain.Mr. Sauer has subtly added phrasings, breaths and articulations to the original score to aid in the performance for Trombone choir. The music is about eight minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers.

“Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) Serenade in C minor was written by the composer in 1782-83. The work remains widely performed by Wind Octets, making it one of the most significant, substantial works in the wind ensemble repertoire. David Walter's transcription of Serenade in C minor, also known as Serenade No. 12, is for Wind Quintet, making the popular work even more accessible and versatile. Serenade in C minor comprises four movements; 1) Allegro, 2) Andante, 3) Menuet and Trio, and 4) Allegro. This edition of Mozart's Serenade in C minor for Wind Quintet is essential to all ensembles looking for exciting, yet traditional repertoire.&rdquo.

Andalag # 11- Duo for Alto Flute and Bassoon. Part of Andalag - Suite in 11 movements. Programme note: Some years ago I was asked by the Faroese ensemble Aldubaran to compose duets for the woodwinds within the ensemble. The idea then came to me to write a Suite with the name Andalag in 11 movements. 8 movements are duets and are approximately 4 min. long. 2 movements are quartets and are approximately 8 min. long, and 1 movement is an octet which is approximately 16 min. long. In other words, the Suite will last approximately 60 min. The (octet) instrumentation is 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns and 2 bassoons. The Faroese word andalag has a multilayerd meaning. The first half of the word is anda and means to breath or spirit, and the second half of the word lag means melodi, mood or layer. I use two small ideas in this Suite. One idea is in a sort of major mood and the other in a sort of minor mood. Sunleif Rasmussen, May 2013.

The Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64, and the Sonata in F minor, op. 4, are the only works for solo violin that Mendelssohn had had printed during his lifetime. However, his complete oeuvre includes other completed or fragmentary compositions, including two further concertos and several unfinished sonatas and other individual pieces. He himself had an extraordinary command of the violin and entrusted the instrument in several other works, such as the Octet op. 20 or the concert aria Infelice! - Ah, ritorno, eta dell'oro, with special tasks. Nevertheless, with regard to details of playing technique, he usually sought advice from solo violinist friends, first from Eduard Ritz, then, after Ritz's early death, from Ferdinand David. The present volume contains all of the completed and fragmentary compositions for violin and piano that have survived - from the early Prelude and Fugue in D and G minor from Zelter's practice book (1820), which can be assigned without doubt, through to the Sonata in F major (1838) in their various versions.
