The music of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) is an important link between the innovations of late Romanticism and the experimentation of the early 20th century. A student of Saint-Saëns, he, in turn, taught Ravel and was a mentor to the young modernists of Les Six. Recueil Piano-Nocturnes is a set of 8 pieces for piano by Francis Poulenc. Composed between 1929 and 1938 for intermediate players this set was composed as a cycle and represents night scenes of different events. They can be differentiated from most of the other nocturnes as they are not romantic tone-poems. Nocturnes’s eight pieces are:- 1st Nocturne (C Major)- 2nd Nocturne – Young girl's ball / Bal de jeunes filles (A Major) - 3rd Nocturne – Maines’ bells / Les Cloches de Maines (F Major) - 4th Nocturne – Ghost’s Ball / Bal fantome (C minor) - 5th Nocturne–Moths / Phalenes (B minor) - 6th Nocturne (G major) - 7th Nocturne (Cb major) - 8th Nocturne (For Coda) Francis Poulenc is French compositor and pianist. He also produced Piano and Chamber pieces Operas ('Dialogues des Carmélites') ballets ('Les Biches') as well as some Orchestra works.

In accordance with the tradition of the genre, these are characterised by sentimentality, intimacy and programmatic tendencies. Characteristic for them is a turbulent middle section and a richly ornamented reprise. However, variability of dynamics and musical course are not appropriate for nocturnes, rather holding on to a particular mood, full of expectation or the past brought to the present. Nocturne B Major Op.40 for Violin (2) Viola Violoncello Double Bass.This piece was originally one of two slow movements from String Quintet in G major Op.18 dating from 1874. Dvorak later removed it from the quintet and after various revisions offered it to the Berlin publisher Bote & Bock as an independent work entitled Nocturne.Apart from this version for String Orchestra there also exist versions for Violin and Piano and for four-hand Piano. This title is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.
