A versatile Mass setting for use throughout the liturgical year, Mass of the Sun of Justice / Misa Sol de Justicia is fully bilingual, singable entirely in English or in Spanish, or any pastoral combination of both languages. At its core, this setting is built on assembly-minded melodies. Much of the choral writing is two-part, albeit spelled out in four voices, whereby the basses frequently double the soprano melody, and the alto and tenor lines essentially share a single harmony in their respective ranges, splitting only at cadence points for a fuller effect. Optional descants and divisi further expand the voicing possibilities. The additional instrumentation is particularly spirited, further enhancing these sung texts for solemn occasions. “Sun of justice” is a term used to reference Christ with respect to his second coming, as found in the ancient “O” antiphons. This title appears in the Lectionary among the Alleluia options for the common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is, in fact, assigned to the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, celebrated within the Advent season. As such, the music is “Advent-like” in nature—joyful and filled with hope.

Jan de Haan took as a starting point for Music for a Solemnity an old custom from the Dutch town of Hoogeveen, by which the faithful are called to church with drums. It was also inspired by the music of John Williams. This unusual combination has resulted in a solemn work in which old traditional methods are united with modern rhythms and melodic lines.

Israelsbrunnlein is one of the most significant motet collection in German music of the 17th century, composed by Johann Hermann Schein, who was certainly the most important Thomaskantor prior to Johann Sebastian Bach. Among the 26 pieces, composed in the Italian-Madrigalische Manir most of them are based on Old Testament texts, hence the name of the collection. Originally written for festive or solemn occasions, such as weddings, funerals or graduations, they unite madrigal style with the polyphonic art of sacred motets.

This short but solemn overture was written on the occasion of the 110th jubilee of Harmonie Hautcharage, Luxembourg. It is an homage to Jean-Paul Frisch and his son Gérard (the present conductor), who each have been conducting theensemble for many years. Under their leadership, the band has developed and improved remarkably. The very first musical theme, presented during the introduction of this little overture, is based on the letters hidden in the namesJean-Paul and Gérard Frisch (in which h is considered b as it is in German), thus aiming the spotlight on both key figures in the history of Harmonie Hautcharage. After the rather stately intro, the allegro is more joyful andlighthearted, thus depicting the optimism of the many young players of the band. The end is exciting and energetic: it radiates positivity and belief in the future.

This stately work by Dutch composer Jan de Haan will serve well as a restful time-out during any concert, or as music for any solemn occasion. The melancholic themes appear in both major and minor keys and slowly build to abrilliant finale. This is an ideal composition to add a touch of stately grandeur to any concert.
