Music For Piano Four Hands

Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands. For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs) and this set of three as published form a satisfying unit. The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme.Contrasting material follows making use of a distinctive repeated note figure then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin???s A minor Prelude with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy.

Arrangement for Piano Four-hands by Maurice Ravel- Ravel had limitless admiration for Debussy’s famous orchestral work going so far as to say in an interview that it was his innermost wish to die to the sounds of this “uniquemarvel in the whole of music”. Since Debussy had himself already published a version for two pianos Ravel in 1910 undertook an arrangement for piano 4-hands. It was published that same year by Fromont in Paris andmade an impact all of its own. Henle have been able to recruit Debussy specialist Denis Herlin as editor of this Henle Urtext edition the first to evaluate all the available sources. The fingerings are by Andreas Groethuysen ofthe famous Tal & Groethuysen Duo.

Composer Philip Glass returned to composition for chamber ensemble after several years of work for films ballet opera and solo instruments. Four Movements For Two Pianos was commissioned by hislong-time advocate the conductor and pianist Dennis Russell Davies and pianist Maki Namakawa and after the success of this piece at the Ruhr Piano Festival the pair decided to continue performing as a duo. The piece can belocated more at the classical end of Glass’ compositional spectrum retaining all the propulsive rhythms arpeggiation and repetitiveness that are the hallmarks of the composer’s work. American composerPhilip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music withrepetitive structures.’ His operas among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach are performed across the globe and he has created work for small and large ensembles film and experimental theatre and founded his ownperforming group The Philip Glass Ensemble.

Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) put this motto of classical artists at the heart of his music for piano four hands preferring the balance of proportions to the roar of passions the eclecticism of good taste charm and delicacy. Berceuses falls within the French tradition of children's music such as illustrated by Fauré's Dolly and Ravel's Ma mère l’Oye. These seven pieces evoke with refinement the happiness of a cloudless day the effervescence that reigns on Christmas Eve or the gentle syncopated rocking of a young Creole Selfiana. The Variations puériles sur une mélodie de CarlReinecke manifest a free whimsical vein whereas the Trois préludes sur des airs irlandais drink at the pure sources of folk music borrowing their thematic material from the famous collection Songs of Old Ireland which Stanford had brought out in 1882. Published for the first time from a handwritten score the Variations sur un thème de Charles Levadé end with a wild quadrille that takes the heroes of the celebration to the nearest inn. The Pièce en forme d’aria et Bergerie from 1896 finely polished takes up with the ambiance of the pastorale popular in the 17th century.

Franz Schubert was one of the most prolific composers of ensemble piano music and the Rondo in A Major Op. 107 demonstrates his mastery at writing for one piano four hands. The Rondo was composed in 1828 for the famous Viennese company Artaria. The work is warm and lyrical in contrast to many of Schubert???s other compositions for four hands. Its themes are highly decorative treated freely and full of exciting rhythms.

The Czech composer Emil Hradecký (born 1953) is the author of a whole number of instructive pieces for children often inspired with dance music and jazz. The previously published Piano works of Hradecký – A Little Jazz Album Dance Compositions for Piano Four Hands and Jazz Etudes – are further complemented by Jazz Pieces For Twenty Fingers. The publication offers simple four-hand stylisations of popular modern dances (waltz cha-cha ragtime samba tango etc.)
