Music's Echo

This a cappella gem uses optional percussion accompaniment creating a Renaissance sound and madrigal effect. Beginning with a simple melody each part joins with its own melody. Soon the polyphonic singing is gloriously forte andbuilds to a strong ending. “How sweet the answer echo makes to music at night.” “Music's Echo” is a sweet musical work to use as a processional or it may be sung antiphonally by two or more choirs. Part of the Wtritten For You Series Kevin R. Olson's Echoes of Egypt is a sparkling and lyrical piece which promotes musical expression. This mysterious Egyptian-sounding piece is written for the late elementary level student. The A section contains a haunting single note melody while the B section has an interesting change in mood using a LH melody with RH triads moving downward step wise in a rhythmic fashion. The A section then returns to end the piece.

Shadow of Paradise was written specially for Melinda Maxwell. The work was completed in 2005 the same year that she recorded the work together with Richard Benjafield (percussion) for the Dutton label.'The work is based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Kubla Khan and I have attempted to capture some of the spirit of his highly evocative text in my music.It is structured in three main sections: the opening section (And ‘mid this tumult Kubla heard from far Ancestral voices prophesying war) is dramatic in nature with the oboe announcing two ideas - the first a high repeated note rhythmic pattern (later with multiphonics) answered by six differentlypitched drums and temple blocks and the second a short lyrical phrase mainly built on thirds.In the second section (A damsel with a dulcimer In a vision once I saw…Could I revive within me Her symphony and song) the solo oboe transforms the repeated notes and thirds of the first section into a love song underpinned by the percussionist’s vibraphone and crotales.A short reprise of the very opening leads into the final section (Beware! Beware! His flashing eyes his floating hair! Weave a circle round him thrice…) which mirrors the text with three short dances in chain form folk-like in character and increasingly climactic. Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. La période de confinement qui a débuté en France en mars 2020 a été pour moi l'occasion de réfléchir aux directions que je désirais prendre dans les années à venir et de me lancer quelques petits défis d'écriture. Parmi eux, j'ai décidé de débuter la composition de deux pièces pour le même effectif, à savoir le quatuor à cordes, afin précisément de tester ma capacité à me renouveler. Si le Quatuor n°5 est une œuvre abstraite et continue (il s'agit en fait d'un canon rigoureux entre les quatre instruments), le Quatuor n°7 est une pièce moins linéaire, ou plutôt, une pièce où des linéarités se succèdent et s'entrechoquent. Il s'agit en effet d'une œuvre ou plusieurs processus de déformation d'une idée initiale rythment la forme. La notion de périodicité est omniprésente, dès le début de l'œuvre où un accord est répété à intervalle de plusieurs secondes, le silence étant progressivement investi par des textures de plus en plus continues. Au milieu de la pièce, les quatre instruments investissent une texture globale composée de périodicités superposées, comme si des métronomes à des tempi différents étaient déclenchés en même temps. Ce quatuor est une œuvre que je qualifierais de 'mécanique' et a été composé dans la perspective d'être augmenté par un orchestre dans une pièce concertante, Cadenza n°4, que j'ai déjà écrite. Par ESCAICH THIERRY. Ce sont des déambulations nocturnes dans des usines désaffectées de pays de l'Est d'où émanaient des réminiscences de musiques techno dans un décor de street art qui ont donné naissance à l'univers de cette pièce. On y retrouve, stylisées, des pulsations obstinées et synthétiques, des nappes de textures plus linéaires, des sons à l'envers qui s'entrechoquent dans l'espace sonore, des motifs répétitifs aux métriques différentes superposées. Dans une seconde partie de l'?uvre, ce climat se dissipe pour laisser place à une sorte de ballade désenchantée dont la guitare égraine les notes avec simplicité et nonchalance sur un cantus de basse lent et profond ... À plusieurs reprises la guitare semble vouloir s'échapper de cette ambiance et impose des parties rythmiquement plus contrastées jusqu'à un dernier retour, cette fois plus lyrique, de mélodie initiale. Après une brève cadence plus évanescente, un moteur rythmique se remet en marche très progressivement et emmène la pièce vers un final où se mêlent les univers des deux parties précédentes.
