In 2008, composer Philip Sparke published the latest volume of his instrumental books, Super Solos. Young German flautist Meinhard Drescher was so taken with these solos that his father secretly commissioned the composer toarrange three of the solos (Little Overture, Berceuse and Moto Perpetuo) into a mini-concerto for flute and concert band, which was presented to Meinhard as a 16th birthday present. Concertino Classico is in the standardquick-slow-quick concerto form and can be played by flute, clarinet or alto saxophone.

As the title suggests, this piece comprises a set of variations on an original chorale, which is presented in the opening bars. The chorale uses the dark middle and lower sections of the band and is extended with minor variations until a pause leads to the first real variation, marked Vivo. This is in the form of a moto perpetuo. The second variation is a beautiful Andante introduced by a solo clarinet. Following a full band climax the final variation opens with quiet, nervous energy until its main theme is introduced. The chorale makes a brief appearance until the main theme reappears. This leads to a triumphant final augmented statement of the chorale theme, decorated by theflorid clarinet theme in the upper woodwinds. A dazzling new concert work.

The High Songs, a commission from 12 bands across the country, became a 24-minute suite for Amplified Cello and Chamber Winds of five movements, an instrumental song cycle featuring the solo cello in high tessitura. The calm opening (Nepenthe) is followed by a big band evocation (Moto Perpetuo). Pann further explores the ensemble with Passacaglias and Adjusting the Torque (a nod to fellow composer Michael Torke), then finishes the suite with a simple Song for Heidi, which features a piano duet. When Carter Pann writes a substantial work exploring the vitality and colors of the wind ensemble, the results are guaranteed to be ravishing.
