The third volume moves students toward more advanced playing techniques and literature. This text continues to develop playing skills found in Book 2 and advances the student through more rigorous and lengthy literature. Instrument-specific selections promote performance, reinforcing shifting skills, more advanced bowing techniques, and complex and multiple-meter pieces. The book contains solo literature that: enables the student to use higher positions with suggested fingerings; features accidentals that challenge left-hand intonation; utilizes more complex time signatures, multiple-meters, and challenging rhythmic patterns; and develops the bow stroke to perform more expressive dynamics and musicianship. Summer Dance is a melodic, up-tempo piece with plenty of musical and technical challenges for every player. Musicians should strive to play it with an energetic yet legato feel. A spirited introduction features an opening melody in the violins and active repeated-note pedal patters in the violas and low strings. An AABA form begins at m.5 and the orchestration is immediately pared down to feature violin I and cello. It then builds again in density to the B section, where a quick dynamic drop allows a question-and-answer melody between the two parts to sing out. In m. 29, the melody is harmonized and a countermelody in violin I introduced. The violins take the melody soaring in octaves in m. 33, as the piece again builds to the B section and suddenly quiets. Measure 55 then provides more question-and-answer interplay, this time for viola and cello, while violin continues with its newly harmonized melody. Summer Dance finishes with a soft recurrence of the opening figure and a build toward a powerful divisi voicing on beat 3 of m. 63, right before the final chord.Summer Dance is a melodic, up-tempo piece with plenty of musical and technical challenges for every player. Dance of the Harlequins is a lively work that uses the harmonic progression of the famous Pachelbel Canon as its foundation. Larry Clark uses this line as a jumping-off point to create an ingenuous work that shows the many moods of the Harlequin clown, from joyous to melodramatic. When I started to write this piece I came up with the main melody first, then I harmonized it. In the process of doing that I realized that I was composing a new piece that was based on the harmonic progression found in the famous Canon by Johann Pachelbel. At first this sort of worried me, but then by doing a little research on the famous canon, I realized I was far from alone. There is even an incredibly funny YouTube video called “Pachelbel Rant†where comedian Rob Paravonian points out many of the usages of the chord progression from Pachelbel’s Canon found in many popular/rock songs. Watch it if you get a chance it is very funny! So, I decided to forge ahead and complete the piece. After the main theme begins without introduction that includes short punctuations of the harmony in the lower strings, the main theme is repeated with a countermelody playedby the violas. The cellos then take up a new B theme with the countermelody to this section covered by the first violins. The main theme with counter melody is stated one more time before it is followed by a transition to a more lyrical and augmented theme that is first presented in the violas. This theme repeats now with the melody in the first violins and a countermelody added in the violas. One more statement of the lyrical section theme is presented, but now the celli state the original main theme in augmentation along with the lyrical theme and countermelody. This is followed by an extended transition that leads back tot the B section theme now presented in the violins. After an extended cadence and build, the main theme returns one last time followed by a lively coda to complete the piece. There is something about the use of this famous chord progression that just makes it feel so right. I hope that I did justice to it and provided you and your students with a musical vehicle that will be enjoyable and at the same time educational. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—LARRY CLARKLakeland, FL 2011.

The fast paced rondo has a Dorian flavored melody with hints of quartel (based on an interval of a fourth) harmony to give it a contemporary sound The players are presented with solo opportunities as well as harmonic turns and twists that will keep them.Rondo in the Nick of Time was originally the third movement for a woodwind quintet piece that I wrote in 1990. I have always been fond of this little piece and felt that it would adapt well to larger ensembles. I have also scored this piece for band as part of a suite called Upon a New Horizon. The main theme is based on the Dorian Mode. The use of quartal harmony makes up most of the harmonic material. Each statement of the theme is followed by an episode that increases in length each time. There is a sudden change of style and tempo in the middle of the piece, where fragments of the theme are developed. The title is a play-on-words, since the work contains hemiola effects that alter the feel of the time.As with all of my pieces for strings, the bowings are given only as a reference. Feel free to alter them to fit the needs of your students. I have indicated a rather fast tempo for the piece. I really like the piece to fly, but it will work and sound fine at a slower tempo as well. Just endeavor to keep their energy moving forward. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope that you and your students enjoy it and find it useful in your program.-Larry ClarkLakeland, FL. 2005.

The Austro-Hungarian composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was musically precocious: At the suggestion of AntonÃn Dvorák, he receivedpiano lessons at the age of seven, and at the age of ten became a student at the Prague Conservatory. Further piano studies in Vienna, Cologne and Leipzig as well as composition lessons with Max Reger supplemented his education. His Jewish heritage, which defamed his music as “degenerateâ€, and his sympathy for communism, however, cost him his life. In Prague and finally interned in Wülzburg near Weissenburg in Bavaria, he died of tuberculosis. Schulhoff's musical significance lies in the integration of jazz into art music, for example in his oratorio H.M.S. Royal Oak or in his Hot Sonata for alto saxophone and piano. He earned his living as a jazz pianist for a long time. In August 1922 he wrote four short piano pieces, his Rag Music, to which he added four more phrases in November: released as Partita, also known as Jazz-like Partita - with the fashion dances Ragtime, Foxtrott, Shimmy, Boston and - as No. 7 - a tango. From a piano to a string quartet movement, the arrangement presents itself as a delicate and smart, technically not too difficult sweet, suitable as a diversion or addition in a quartet program.
