Military March

In this piece for second-year players Paul Murtha masterfully adapts the traditional military march form for young musicians. The first strain is carried by trumpets and upper woodwinds while the low brass take the lead on the second strain. After a brief percussion break the legato trio melody features the woodwind section. A “call and response” breakstrain is followed by the full band on the rousing finish. Best known for his military marches John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era. Sousa's most famous marches include 'The Liberty Bell' 'The Thunderer' 'The WashingtonPost' 'Semper Fidelis' (Official March of the United States Marine Corps) and 'The Stars and Stripes Forever' (National March of the United States of America).The Northern Pines march was composed in 1931and is scored for Concert Band. Named for the tall and beautiful pine trees that blanket the National Music Camp at Interlochen in northern Michigan Sousa dedicated the march to the students who came to the camp and toDr Joseph Maddy its founder. Sousa was the guest conductor of the assembled student band for the première.

Queen of Lake Malaren March. Par WIDQVIST VIKTOR. One of Viktor Widqvist's most well-known marches is undoubtedly Mälarrottningen. It was probably composed as early as the 1910s when he was serving in the engineering troops, but was published as late as 1950. The march's subtle minor tonality and the elegant runs in the woodwind bring to mind the wavy waters of Riddarfjärden in summertime. Mälardrottningen is just like the other marches by Widqvist composed for the old military band setting without saxophones. The big challenge has been to rearrange the music without changing the timbre and I have put a lot of emphasis on keeping the elegance and resilience of the original and therefore let some instruments pause in parts to get transparency in the timbre.
