Military March, Op. 51, No. 1

A marvellous collecton of marches from some of the great composers including Berlioz Handel Tchaikovsky and Verdi.

Composed for second year players Paul Murtha masterfully adapts the traditional military march form for young players. The first strain is carried by trumpets and upper woodwinds while the low brass take the lead on the second strain. After a brief percussion break the legato trio melody features the woodwind section. A call and response breakstrain is followed by the full band on the rousing finish. Best known for his military marches John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era. Sousa's most famous marches include 'The Liberty Bell' 'The Thunderer' 'The WashingtonPost' 'Semper Fidelis' (Official March of the United States Marine Corps) and 'The Stars and Stripes Forever' (National March of the United States of America).The Northern Pines march was composed in 1931and is scored for Concert Band. Named for the tall and beautiful pine trees that blanket the National Music Camp at Interlochen in northern Michigan Sousa dedicated the march to the students who came to the camp and toDr Joseph Maddy its founder. Sousa was the guest conductor of the assembled student band for the première.

Citadel?s Destiny is a march that can be performed either in concert or on parade. It was commissioned by the Musique de l?Infanterie de Lille. A special feature is that it adheres to the conventional codes of military marches albeit with a modern twist. The title refers to the citadel built by Vauban in Lille ?The Queen of Citadels? with which the band shares a destiny. This march is still performed by the Infantry Band as part of their traditional concert repertoire.

Huilukonsertto. Par ENGLUND EINAR. Einar Englund?s (1916-1999) Flute Concerto (1985) is beyond dispute one of his greatest works. Its finest attributes are its rich melodic invention, colourful instrumentation and immediate message. Add to these its rewarding solo part, and the result is truly one of his best concertos ? and works. He himself did not hesitate to regard it as such. It was premiered in Helsinki on September 16, 1985, having been completed at Ljugarn on the Swedish island of Gotland at the end of June. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Leif Segerstam, and the soloist was the concerto?s dedicatee, Mikael Helasvuo. The Flute Concerto opens with a Ritornello in which the flute's playful, dance-like passages make sharp contrast with the orchestra's heroic stance. In the mellow Canzona which follows, the flute plays rhapsodically over repetitive orchestral figures. The work's 'action-packed' finale hints at parody in its military march-like opening, but also gives rein to the lyricism already familiar from the second movement. From the 11th Sonato of K.331 Rondo Alla Turca is one of Mozart's most popular works. This is the third movement and it took its inspiration from the quasi-Turkish music that was the fashion in Vienna during the late 18th and early 19th century. Sections of the piece imitate the bass drums and cymbals which typify the military march genre providing a greater sense of grandeur and a rousing dynamic.
