The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. While the first movement of his famous fifth symphony is more often performed, the majestic and triumphant finale beautifully exemplifies the craftsmanship and genius of one of the greatest composers of all time. Slightly truncated in form, this masterful adaptation for concert band still retains the thematic material, power, and excitement found in the original. (MusicWorks).

The conductor's score contains only a shortened version of the extensive Critical Report that was published separately in book form: Brown: A New Appraisal of the Sources of Beethoven's Fifth SymphonyISBN 9790004332344. 10 x 12.5 inches.
The present Urtext edition is based on the known surviving primary sources, and also incorporates two further, previously ignored sources, including a copy of the score made presumably in Vienna around 1820.The score contains a summarizing Critical Report in which the annotations and divergences from familiar editions that seem to be particularly important are brought out through bold print. In the separately published study Die Neubewertung der Quellen von Beethovens Funfter Symphonie (Wiesbaden: Breitkopf & Hartel, 1996), there is an extensive discussion of the source dependencies as well as facts on the origin and transmission of the work.Words are not enough to praise this exemplary edition, resulting from many years of systematic editorial work on the sources. Breitkopfs source-critical, practice-oriented edition by Clive Brown and Peter Hauschild will provide valuable new impulses in the interpretation of Beethovens music. Beethoven's Sixth Symphony (Pastorale) was written in the summer months of 1807 and 1808. The first performance of the work - along with that of the Fifth Symphony - took place on 22 December 1808 as part of a musical Akademie, or subscription concert, in the Theater an der Wien under the direction of the composer.Peter Hauschild's Urtext edition of the Pastorale is based on all the important primary sources: autograph, first edition of the parts (Leipzig: Breitkopf & Hartel, 1809), copies of scores supervised by Beethoven and, finally, the first edition of the score. Hauschild has combined source criticism and the requirements of performance practice while also keeping the Critical Report succinct and easy to grasp; this makes the editorial decisions easy to trace.Hauschild's new edition is based on all the major primary sources: autograph, first edition of the parts, copies of the score supervised by Beethoven, and the first edition of the score.
