Based on the liturgical hymn The Doxology written in 1674 by Thomas Ken, this lyrical and sensitive arrangement for the beginning band provides multiple teaching opportunities in a rich musical setting. The first melodic statement is written as a musical exchange between soloists or sections creating a connection and awareness between sections of the band. The second melodic statement is a lush full ensemble setting in contrast. The use of mixed meter in an accessible and musically logical manner reinforces teaching and concepts introduced in the first year of most beginning band methods. A beautiful and educational choice for your concert program!

During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. They also make great pieces for band warm-ups or studies in intonation, sound and balance.

Liturgical ceremonies throughout each year provide images of beautiful lights in sacred and solemn remembrance. Using the shimmering of candles as a musical metaphor, composer Robert W. Smith has created a beautifully scored work in Vespers of Light that is ideal for performance during the holidays, Easter or any candlelit vesper. Beautiful and lush, your rising band will sound very mature as they develop their expressive performance skills. Highly recommended for concert and festival programming!

This cycle of orchestral songs sets four poems from an early collection by Rilke entitled Das Stundenbuch, or in English, Book of Hours. Although the title refers to a medieval book of prayers for the various times of day and seasons of the liturgical year, Rilke's texts occupy a position some distance from conventional piety. There is a melancholy to the spirituality expressed here, which speaks of an experience of God that is fragmentary, imperfect, and unattainable. The solitude evoked in the second song (as layers of busy activity are gradually peeled away) offers some solace, but the third song is very dark and fierce, filled with a desperate, even manic desire for God. The last song returns to the mood of the first, but now in a global rather than individual context. This song, like the set as a whole, speaks of our world's brokenness, yet strives to stammer fragments of God's name.

Jeremiah Clarke (c. 1674-1707) belongs to the generation of English composers following that of Henry Purcell. Not much is known about his early life, but by 1685 he was a chorister of the Chapel Royal, a group of liturgical musicians attached to the court. He held the post of organist at Winchester College from 1692 but later returned to London as Master of the Choristers at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Prince of Denmark’s March is perhaps his best-known work and was originally written for harpsichord, although Clarke later included it in a collection of pieces for wind instruments.

Beethoven described his Missa solemnis several times as his greatest work. Coming from the heart, it was intended to touch and move audiences. Beethoven worked long and intensively on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings; for good reason, the premiere took place in a concert hall. With this arrangement for chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, timpani and strings, plus organ ad lib), smaller choirs, as well as choirs with more limited resources of space or finance, can now perform this work too. However, the symphonic character and wide dynamic range of the work remain. The scoring of 7 instead of 18 winds offers an optimal balance between transparency and orchestral sound. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version, so that the vocal score and chorus score of that version can be used. Major mass can also be performed by smaller choir Wind and brass parts of the original version reduced to just seven single instruments Vocal scores and choral scores from the original version can be used. carus plus: the work (original version) is available in carus music, the choir app, and in the practice CD series Carus Choir Coach. Score available separately - see item CA.4068900.
