Two of the most popular of Chanukah tunes are arranged by master string pedagogue Doris Gazda for the youngest of students. Though simple, it give the very young player the chance to sound wonderful at the very first holiday concert.More than 2000 years ago Israel, the land of the Jewish people, was ruled byGreeks and Syrians. A small group of Jewish people fought to free their country and defeated the big armies of their rulers. The Jews reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to God. To celebrate, they wanted to light the menorah, a candelabrum with a place for nine candles. Each evening they would light the menorah: a single candle the first night, two on the second night and so on until all eight candles were lit. The ninth candle of the menorah was used to light the other candles. However, they found that they had only enough oil to burn the candle for one day. Yet miraculously, the one-day supply burned for eight days. So to celebrate the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days, they commemorated the event with the festival of Chanukah.Children celebrate Chanukah with singing the Chanukah song and with gifts of toys such as dreydls. A dreydl is a little top that is spun by dragging the thumb and one finger across a little spindle.

The traditional Jewish practice for the holiday of Hanukkah is to recall ancient miracles and increase the light in the world by lighting a nine-stemmed menorah. One candle is added each night until the menorah is full on the eighth night. After lighting the candles each night, those gathered around the menorah sing these ancient blessings. The first two blessings are sung on all eight nights, and the third blessing is only sung on the first. This melody, first published in New York in 1922, is commonly used throughout the world. It is sung by crowds of thousands gathering to light a community menorah and small families gathering in their homes alike.

Smith has created a beautifully scored work in Vespers of Light that is ideal for performance during the holidays, Easter or any candlelit vesper. Beautiful and lush, your rising band will sound very mature as they develop their expressive performance skills. Highly recommended for concert and festival programming!

The poem Der Mond ist aufgegangen by Matthias Claudius is equally well known and loved. In the setting by Manfred Langer sound is joined by the visual element. The moon risen - dimmed hall lights and candles. Than follows richly harmonious and atmospheric choral music. And when the moon has gone down - darkness, silence. One can scarcely imagine a more fitting conclusion to a concert.

Advent candle lighting anthem Designed to support the lighting of the Advent candles, this includes a choral opening based on Coventry Carol, followed by a call and response litany with piano underscore, then a text to be read with the lighting of the candle. As that concludes, the choir comes back in with the option of adding the congregation for an original melody calling for peace on earth and for the Light of light to end our darkness. A concluding prayer is also provided. There are five readings, one for each candle. Reproducible parts for the congregation and 7 optional handbells are included.
