This collection of Rummel's J.S. Bach 'adaptations' for the Piano presents twelve titles from the original twenty-five originally published by J & W Chester between 1922 and 1938, demonstrating a range of styles from the contemplative Liebster Jesu, Wir Sind Hier to the uninhibited Sturze zu Boden. A close friend of Debussy, Rummel belonged to a younger generation of leading composers, leading a trend away from previous Keyboard transcribers, established by Busoni, Liszt, Reger and others who concentrated on adapting Bach's Organ works rather than the Vocal music. <br>This vibrant collection is suitable for intermediate to advanced pianists but will be of interest to all who enjoy Bach's music for Keyboard. <br>Born in Berlin to a diversely creative family, Walter Rummel (1887 - 1953) was surrounded by art and music from an early age. He came from a pedigree of distinguished musicians, his family home a favoured meeting place for musicians and artists alike. His great grandfather, Christian Rummel (1787 - 1849) was director of the court orchestra at Wiesbaden for Duke Wilhelm of Nassau and his maternal grandfather, Samuel Morse (1791 - 1892), the American painter and inventor of the telegraph. / [J.S. Le ' petit livre d'orgue ', peut-être la plus célèbre collection jamais des préludes chorals, doit son titre à l'application de J.S. Bach pour le poste de Cantor à l'église Saint-Thomas de Leipzig. N'ayant pas un diplôme universitaire, Bach voulait démontrer ses qualités comme enseignant à travers ses compositions - y compris ses Inventions, Sinfonias et le ' bien tempérée Klavier '. Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 7 Orgelbüchlein - with CD-ROM - ed. by Sven Hiemke Of great practical value ?This edition has everything it takes to replace the Griepenkerl edition for practical music-making,? opined Rainer Goede (in ?kirchmusik.de?) immediately after the release of Volumes 5 and 6. If such a high degree of practical value is attested to these two volumes, then Volume 7 can proudly claim to have the highest practical value of all, since it has the greatest scope of all the volumes. After all, no organist can do without the basic repertoire of the 45 chorale preludes. Edited by Sven Hiemke, the book offers the best possible prerequisites for everyday use. The musical text is as faithful to the sources as possible, and it preserves Bach?s graphic idiosyncrasies in the beaming of eighth notes and sixteenth notes. Furthermore, the chorales are reproduced on three staves, which is fully in keeping with the practice of the Bach era ? but not with the source, however, since the composer himself notated the pieces of the ?Orgelbüchlein? on two staves, either for reasons of economy or for lack of space. The enclosed CD-ROM contains early versions and anonymous arrangements which should encourage organists to explore this repertoire in greater depth.
