Voilà un outil pédagogique facile d'accès, de très bonne vulgarisation, agrémenté de nombreux et utiles exemples musicaux. Il permet d'aborder aisément le paysage de l'orchestre et ses instruments, du Moyen-Age jusqu'à nos jours. Je souhaite à cet ouvrage tout le succès qu'il mérite. Jean-Claude Casadesus L'histoire de la musique instrumentale occidentale est relativement récente en comparaison avec celle de la musique vocale. De plus les instruments et l'orchestre, de même que leurs répertoires respectifs, ont considérablement évolué à travers les siècles. Ce livre a pour objet de retracer cette évolution en dégageant les éléments essentiels qui la constituent. Il ne se prétend en aucune façon constituer une étude exhaustive mais plutôt une entrée en matière pour permettre ensuite un approfondissement à ceux qui le souhaitent. La préhistoire et l'histoire ancienne ne feront pas l'objet d'une présentation car trop éloignées des préoccupations de cet ouvrage. L'histoire du XXe siècle ne sera abordée que dans sa première moitié, le développement instrumental récent ne pouvant être résumé avec un recul suffisant pour l'observer de manière satisfaisante. Une partie sera également consacrée aux fonctionnements et caractéristiques des instruments actuels, aux techniques d'instrumentation et d'orchestration à proprement parler ainsi qu'à la préparation des partitions. De nombreux extraits musicaux sont présentés afin d'illustrer les propos du livre. Ils seront présentés tels qu'ils ont été édités, avec des instruments transpositeurs et une terminologie en langues étrangères (en partie avec traduction), cela dans le but de permettre au lecteur de se familiariser avec la réalité de la lecture des partitions d'orchestre. Et puisque nous parlons de perception visuelle, rappelons enfin que le concert reste un excellent moyen de visualiser le phénomène sonore et de comprendre plus aisément l'architecture d'une musique.
