Playing in a duo is great fun for professional musicians and amateurs alike and can inspire creative music making. Bringing together the sounds of different string instruments extends the range of notes and volume of sound to be enjoyed by players and audiences, too. These pieces represent encounters between two people, with each of the nine compositions taking a specific moment or mood as its theme. Titles and indications of style and tempo will give performers ideas for interpretation, with markings relating to technique, articulation, bowing and fingerings offered for guidance. For players who would like to work out their own interpretation of these Dialogues, the second section of the book includes an unmarked score of the same pieces (with no indications of dynamics, fingerings, bowings, articulation or phrasing). This additional score is intended for use by instrumental teachers who wish to work with their pupils on marking up and arranging pieces of music for string instruments. These Dialogues are aimed at young people and adult musicians, too. They may be played as a cycle in the order given in this book, or else combined at will. Individual Dialogues may serve as useful teaching material, for student auditions or for inclusion in student concerts or chamber performances. Their musical content and brevity make these duets particularly suitable repertoire for youth music competitions. The overall duration of the set of Dialogues is about fifteen minutes.

Expect the unexpected in this major new work for Saxophone quartet and band by James Curnow. Built on a grand thematic plane, this tour de force employs the full range of expression. Gleaming modernity; dark modality; rhythms ranging from tentative to deliberate; and throughout, a sense of mysterious expectation for what is next to come. Expectations are fulfilled with the Presto finale. Not every band is capable of playing at this level, but if yours is, consider breaking new ground with DIALOGUES.In Dialogues voor saxofoonkwartet, harmonieorkest en slagwerk ontvouwen zich levendige dialogen tussen de solisten, maar ook het harmonieorkest komt in dit expressieve, veeleisende werk ruimschoots aan bod.

The clarinettist Irith Gabriely was inspired by her love of Barbara Heller's Dialogues (for violin and viola) to arrange these duets for two Bb clarinets. The result is a set of varied concertante dialogues that present clarinettists with a few challenges, requiring stamina, breath control, intense and contrasting dynamics, chromatic passages, whole tone passages, sensitive tone production, leaps across wide intervals, fast playing, disciplined rhythmic control and listening to one another closely. In this edition all tempo indications and dynamic markings are intended for guidance: these duets may equally well be interpreted in other ways. This edition therefore also includes a second section where all the pieces are reproduced without such markings, ready for individual interpretation. The Dialogues lend themselves very well to chamber performances; they are also short enough to serve as brief interludesat readings or exhibitions. Their expressive qualities, brevity and range of musical and technical demands make them highly suitable material for youth music competitions. A flute or oboe might well be played with the clarinet as alternative instrumentation for these duets (ED 22017).

An exciting communicative musical journey: These Dialogues have the violin and cello adopting different personalities, temperaments and moods to 'speak' to one another. The titles of the pieces and descriptive headings, such as Chatting, Giggling or Contest, suggest how the pieces may be played. In order to make these ten chamber pieces accessible to students at various different levels, all the duets appear again without markings in the second section of the book, providing an opportunity to experiment with different bowings and fingerings.

A devout Catholic and social progressive, Louise Talma was devastated by John F. Kennedy's death, and immediately began commemorating the president in her music. Her first work of commemoration was her piano concerto Dialogues, which was premiered in December 1965 by pianist Grant Johannesen and the Buffalo Orchestra led by Lukas Foss. A response to Kennedy's unfinished plans, all five of the piece's movements, Challenge, Struggle, Respite, Pursuit, and Peace, are focused on the creation and completion of patterns. --Kendra Preston Leonard, Louise Talma: A Life in Composition.

Dorian Dialogue is a concert piece for string ensembles set in the Dorian mode. The original melodies are evocative of English folk melodies. The first theme is rustic in nature and performed with gusto, while the contrasting second theme flows in a singing style. A perfect selection to highlight your ensemble in festival performance and help you teach simple sixteenth note figures.Dorian Dialogue is a concert piece for string ensembles with at least two years of instruction. Owing to the setting in the Dorian mode, the melodies, while original, may strike some as being evocative of English folk melodies. The first theme is rustic in nature and should be performed with gusto. The contrasting second theme (m.38) should flow in a singing style. Balance is critical when the two themes are heard simultaneously beginning in m. 54. First violin players who are capable of playing 8va at mm. 57–61 should do so at the “optional†indication.

I love the winter season, perhaps because I was born in February. My hometown is known for its cold weather in winter. In fact, my first name Yukiko means snow girl. My parents gave me this name because it was snowing on the day I was born. Before I started to write the piece, various images depicting the scenery of a snowy morning developed in my mind. Imagine that there is no wind, no sound, and it is a very clear morning. I heard the sound of an organ playing a traditional chorale somewhere from a distance. This is the scenery of my imagination for this piece. You will find many inner melodies, dialogues and conversations between the instruments throughout the piece. Listen carefully to the other instruments and stay in tune while you play.I love the winter season, perhaps because I was born in February. My hometown is known for its cold weather in winter. Sonata No. 6 Kharkiv for guitar solo was composed in 2021, in the end of the COVID-19 lockdown. At that time my family and I were staying in our home city of Kharkiv (also known as Kharkov), Ukraine for almost two years. We considered that pandemic period as a disaster, but later have realized that it actually was a rather happy time, because a war came to our homeland just a few months later. Since 2022 a considerable fraction of the 1.5 millions of Kharkiv citizens have left their homes, those who stayed have been living under ceaseless missile attacks, and many have been killed. I would like to dedicate this Sonata to the frontier city of Kharkiv and, most of all, to its citizens suffering from the war.Yet, the music of the Sonata does not have any specific program. Here I will give a brief overview of its main composition elements to facilitate future interpretations. The first and fourth movements of this Sonata are based on the interplay between the twelve-tone principle and the G-major tonal center, natural for the guitar. Namely, the first movement is based on the interaction of the G-major triad Gâ??Bâ??D of the open guitar strings 2â??3â??4, ascending motif 1 involving the notes Eâ??F#â??Aâ??C# (originally on the first string), and descending motif 2 using the notes E-â??Câ??Bbâ??A- (originally, on the bass string 6). These elements supplement each other to almost make up twelve tones (apart from the missing F), and the motifs alternate with ostinato fragments where each note in the G major triad is step-by-step moved by a semitone up or down. The second movement is a Scherzo involving numerous semitones in accented chords and fast passages, as well as chromatic melodic motion in the bass voice. It is almost atonal in some fragments, but has an overall tonal center of A-minor.The third movement is a meditative Adagio based on a theme composed within hexatonic scale Dâ??Eâ??Fâ??G#â??Aâ??B and ostinato chords involving open bass strings Eâ??Aâ??D and semitone Bâ??C.Finally, the fourth movement is based on the complete twelve-tone theme consisting of two phrases including motifs 1 and 2 from the first movement: Gâ??Fâ??Bbâ??Abâ??Câ??Ebâ??D and Eâ??Bâ??C#â??Aâ??F#. This theme is presented in its prime and retrograde forms. There are dialogues between the first string, basses and open middle strings, similar to the first movement. In the culmination, the twelve-tone theme is performed using the parallel motion of the standard guitar G-major chord with open middle strings across twelve positions. The Sonata was premiered and recorded (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) by the prominent Ukrainian guitarist Marko Topchii who has also lived and studied in Kharkiv. I am extremely grateful to him for the brilliant performance of this piece.I am greatly indebted to Productions dâ??Oz for keeping my original notations in places where these do not conform to the publisherâ??s style.
