With the Missa Sancti Nicolai and the Missa Sancti Joannis de Deo, his last to missae breves, Haydn also achieved masterworks in this category, and during his lifetime they numbered among his most popular works. This so called Little Organ Solo Mass has never been accused of being unsuitable for church use despite the text stratification in the Gloria and Credo. Inspite of the unusual brevity of the Gloria (31 bars), the text setting still shows musical differentation. The strength of the composition lies in its expressive ability to force the listener under its spell with magic power. The full score contains at the same time the organ part. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4060000.

According to statements by the composer, the Missa sacra is suitable for both worship services, as well as for concerts, and at the same time it is not difficult to perform. The expressive harmonies, precise use of counterpoint and its concise themes show that the Missa sacra is a highly romantic work which belongs among the great masterpieces of 19th century sacred music. Following a performance in 1861 Clara Schumann wrote to Johannes Brahms: The Kyrie is deeply moving, and as if cast from one mold; in the Sanctus individual movements had such a wonderful sonorous effect that chills ran down my spine. For the present edition Zsigmond Szathmary has made a new arrangement for organ of the original orchestra accompaniment. Additional editions in the Series Choir & Organ.

Carus published the original version of Bruckner's Te Deum for soloists, choir and large orchestra (Carus 27.190) in the fall of 2015. In order to make this work available for performance by smaller-sized ensembles [und einem weiteren Benutzerkreis zuganglich zu machen] Carus now presents it in an arrangement for brass quintet and organ. The brass parts are orientated essentially towards those in Bruckner's orchestral version, while the organ part follows the original string parts. [Damit kann nun auch unter eingeschrankten Bedingungen dieses grossartige Werk in einer adaquaten, stimmigen Form zur Auffuhrung gebracht werden.] As the voice parts (soloists and choir) in this reduced version are identical with those of the original the vocal score and choral score of the latter version can be used. This work is available (in the original version) in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2770500.

Within musical activities there exists a great diversity of different aspects that often go far beyond any particular specialization. Of all cultural activities clearly music is one that manifests numerous multidisciplinary features which not only enriches music itself but also all who are involved in it. This is certainly the case of Jordi Vilaprinyo, an excellent pianist, brilliant composer and a dedicated pedagogue with a remarkable career as a professor at the Conservatorio Municipal de Musica de Barcelona and in other educational institutions. All of this is all in addition to his role as a tireless advocate of everything relating to the piano, which reveals his exceptional personality completely dedicated to his greatest passion-music.The academic year 2011-12 marked the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Conservatorio Municipal de Musica de Barcelona. In honor of the occasion, Jordi Vilaprinyo composed a series of eleven short pieces which present a pianistic-musical portrait of each professor of the Piano Department in our Conservatory. This piece, written in the form of a suite, brings together eleven imaginative musical sketches which reflect the personal qualities and musical personalities of his colleagues as seen through the eyes of Mr. Vilaprinyo. These eleven portraits reveal the respect which Jordi feels for his colleagues and at the same time they are ideal teaching pieces. The various portraits are written in a free and diverse musical language which is always effective. Certain moments are quite evocative while others are more descriptive and, at times, more energetic. The varied textures and sonic balance are always highly controlled and affecting. However, I would like to emphasize, that although the work could be considered as program music due to its personal nature, the pieces stand apart for their musical quality.Published by Editorial Boileau, the work was premiered in a student concert which Professor Maria Rosa Ribas organizes each year. Professor Ribas is one of the members of the Piano Department depicted in the musical portraits. The premiere, performed by students of the Conservatory, took place in the Auditorio Eduard Toldra on May 30, 2011.The Onze retrats [Eleven Portraits] are dedicated respectively to the following professors: Carolina Saldana, Merce Molero, Maria Drets, Montserrat Cabero, Maria Jesus Crespo, Carles Marques, Maria Rosa Ribas, Albada Olaya, Montse Padros, Carme Poch and Mireia Planas.

Among the sacred works by Saint-Saens there are just two settings of the mass: the Messe de Requiem op. 54 from his middle period (1878), and the Mass op. 4 dating from 1856. This was first performed on 21 April 1857. As an alternative to the original version with large orchestra and Grand Orgue, Carus-Verlag is now publishing the version for organ made by Saint-Saens's contemporary Leon Roques. It contains the original part for grand orgue as well as an organ arrangement of the orchestral writing in score notation, but also provides for the possibility of a performance with just one instrument. The vocal parts (for soloists and choir) are identical with the edition of the original version, so that the vocal score and chorus score of that version can be used. Score available separately - see item CA.2706000.

In 1860 Camille Saint-Saens composed his Oratorio de Noel for five vocal soloists, mixed choir, strings, organ and harp. The work, sung in Latin, is based on texts from the Old and New Testaments, the Psalms and Gospels, as well as the Catholic Christmas liturgy. A distinctive chamber music-like instrumentation, with lyrical soloistic parts and a modest choral part combine to create a basic pastoral mood which has led this Christmas Oratorio to become one of the most performed works by Saint-Saens. Carus offers this work both in its original version and in an arrangement in which the choir is accompanied solely by an organ. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.4045500.
