He has added infectious Latin rhythms to the famous Ukrainian Bell Carol with incredibly effective results! The percussion is featured throughout using instruments such as bongos, guiro, timbales, claves and surdo (optional floor tom). This will be the band and audience favorite as the centerpiece or finale of your holiday concert.

The contents of this volume are the extant polyphonic settings of 15th-century carols in English and Latin, here collected for the first time. Though generally religious in content, the carol was essentially a verse form, and apparently the only one extensively cultivated by English musicians.

During his time as Master of the Queen's Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies wrote a new carol for Her Majesty the Queen each Christmas. Ave, Plena Gracia , written for Christmas 2009, was the fifth in this series after An Heavenly Song, Wonder Tidings, The Yule-tide Bell and Kings and Shepherds all of which are published in the Schott Royal Collection.First performed in St. James's Palace by the choir of the Chapel Royal on the Epiphany at the end of the 2009/2010 Christmas period, Ave, Plena Gracia is a short and traditional Latin setting that would be perfect for amateur choirs looking for new repertoire.

The a cappella choral setting Der Tag, der ist so freudenreich for four-part women's choir written by the 1553-born composer Johannes Eccard from Muhlhausen in Thuringia is, indeed, a real pleasure. The German-language text is borrowed from an old Latin Christmas carol, singing of the miracle of Nativity in two verses. Eccard manages, in an engaging manner, to musically express the joyous atmosphere of this poem. All four female voices (SSAA) join imitatively in the angelic chant of joy one after the other, while central words like 'freudenreich' [joyful], 'Himmelreich' [kingdom of heaven], 'Jungfrau' [virgin] or 'Mutter' [mother] are particularly embellished. This is exhilarating and easy-to-perform utility music for Christmas church services.

Charles Dickens certainly would have known the three carols in A CHARLES DICKENS CHRISTMAS. They were among the best-known and best-loved carols of the Victorian Era, and were a staple of the repertoire of roving waits, or carollers, that appear in his novels. Today this music is as familiar as Santa Claus and Tiny Tim. THE FIRST NOWELL was first collected in Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern by William Sandys in 1833. It is most probably 200 years older than that. The Oxford Book of Carols contains nine verses, which makes it an ideal processional for Christmas or Epiphany (the feast commemorating the coming of the Magi). COVENTRY CAROL, or Lully, Lullay, comes from the medieval tradition of mystery and miracle plays. In 1534 the Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors Guild included a scene in which the mothers of Jewish children sang this haunting lullaby after hearing the horrifying order: Herod the king, In his raging, All young children to slay. The music is anonymous; the text believed to be by Robert Croo. ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH is probably of French origin, but the English long ago adopted it as their own. Besides the French text, Les Anges dans nos compagnes, it is known in several versions and by several titles, including Angels from the Realms of Glory, When the Crimson Sun Had Set, and Westminster Carol. It belongs to a category known as macaronic carols, which mix vernacular verses with Latin refrains - in this instance, Gloria in Excelsis Deo (Glory be to God on High). Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 8 Flute, 2 Oboe, 1 Bassoon 1, 1 Bassoon 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 1 Eb Alto Clarinet, 3 Bb Bass Clarinet & Bb Contrabass Clarinet, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 1, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 2, 1 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Trumpet 1, 3 Bb Trumpet 2, 3 Bb Trumpet 3, 2 F Horn 1, 2 F Horn 2, 2 Trombone 1, 2 Trombone 2, 2 Trombone 3, 3 Euphonium (Bass Clef), 2 Euphonium (Treble Clef), 5 Tubas, 1 Timpani, 2 Bells & Chimes, 3 Percussion 1: small triangle, suspended cymbal, crash cymbal, snare drum, bass drum, 2 Percussion 2: large triangle, finger cymbals.

Tony Alonso’s first Christmas recording has much to offer. The selections include fresh new arrangements of many Christmas favorites plus original material by Alonso, John L. Bell, and Liam Lawton. There is also a real “chestnut†among the titles, which may have passed you by. “Child of Light,†by Dan Kantor (composer of GIA’s popular “Night of Silenceâ€), is a delightful quodlibet using the beloved tune greensleeves and featuring a lush string arrangement. This title was published in 1990 but has never appeared on a recorded collection. Other highlights include “From the Cradle to the Cross,†an original carol by Alonso set in a bluegrass style. This haunting text reminds us of the life that Jesus led and modeled for us all. The collection features two songs in Spanish: one a fresh arrangement of the traditional carol “AlegrÃa†and the other a Latin arrangement of “Ding Dong Merrily on High.†John Bell’s new text, “We Do Not Know,†will enlighten your perception of the timeless Christmas story, and Lawton’s soaring refrain found in “Noel, Noel†will stir your soul. Alonso, Bell, Kantor, Lawton—old songs, new songs—English and Español. This is a treasure!  .

QuA(c) verdes son is the Spanish-language version of O Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree). Although the Christmas carol is sung in many languages, the translated lyrics are rarely a close copy of the original German text. Instead, each version finds unique ways to explore the beauty and meaning of one of the holidayas most beloved symbols: the Christmas tree. In QuA(c) verdes son, the beautiful lights, fresh aroma, and especially the lovely color of the tree are celebrated. This arrangement of QuA(c) verdes son begins with simmering Latin percussion playing a groove based on a 3-2 son clave. Subdividing this in groups of eighth notes (123-123-1234-12-12-12) will help lock in the time. In the gA 1/4 iro part, the quarter notes should be scraped and the eighth notes tapped. The main melody begins at m. 5. Rather than needing to be overly loud, much of the energy comes from the silences between notes and from the contrast between accents and staccatos. The woodwind countermelody at m. 9 and m. 17 should be smooth and sweet, a further contrast to the punchy rhythms beneath it. The percussion section is featured at m. 26, with a gradual buildup of textures and rhythmic energy. At m. 38 the whole band is back in, driving toward the fun cha-cha-cha ending.Que verdes son is the Spanish-language version of O Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree).
