Hungarian composer László Lajtha first studied at the Academy of Music in Budapest before moving to Paris to study with Vincent d'Indy. Initially in collaboration with Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály Lajtha studied the transcription of the Hungarian folk song. He soon began composing other significant work including Sonate En Concert for Flute and Piano often incorporating Hungarian influences. Lajtha's composition catalogue comprises mainly of orchestral works however Sonate En Concert for Flute and Piano is made up of four movements; 1)Entrance with Two Cadences 2) Nostalgic Berceuse 3) Melancholic Menuet and 4) Gay Finale. The work is highly virtuosic addressing advanced features such as variations in articulation complex rhythms exploitation of the ensemble chromaticism and uses of extended techniques including flutter tonguing. For all advanced flautists Lajtha's Sonate En Concert is an exciting addition to the repertoire.
