Extensive preface included in Polish, German, and English. The titular term 'juvenilia' denotes student works - the exercises in composition written during the first three years of studies with Heinrich Urban, from the autumn of 1895 to the spring 1898. Only the first of the compositions included in this volume - the character piece Chant de mai for piano - represents the earlier works composed during the Warsaw years. The piano miniature is the oldest extant work by Karlowicz.

The C-minor Kyrie and Jube Dom'ne, Mendelssohn's first eightpart works, may be juvenilia dating from 1822/23, yet they anticipate in many ways the later mastery of the orchestral Psalms. They were written for Frankfurt's Cacilienverein but remained unpublished. Our edition also takes into consideration Mendelssohn's fundamental revision of the Jube Dom'ne, which he undertook at a later date.

The unacquainted listener, upon hearing a piece from the Hahn piano repertoire, is often surprised by its powerful charm - a testament to the composer's unique musical sensibility. Although some of Hahn's musical ideas have roots in the long tradition of Romanticism, they also present a host of new images, scarcely seen in earlier scores. Each piece in this collection is based on a single formula that varies little from start to finish. An exception to this unique principle occurs in the second piece, where the young woman takes fright at the flaming red eye of the setting sun watching her through the branches. As a conclusion, Reynaldo Hahn offers a very free cadence that takes up and comments on the initial theme: the crackling notes culminate in a fortissimo blaze, rapidly followed by a progressive lull that slowly fades away.

English comments: Given that Granados' creative periods continually overlap, in order to organize the works of Granados' Juvenilia this edition has grouped the works according to their chronological-biographical order and/or to their style. The majority of the works in this section were composed between his student years in Paris (1887-1889) and the founding of the Academia Granados in 1901. Many of these works are quite similar to one another being sketches and brief compositions characterised by an unfocused formal structure, harmonic ambiguity and a tendency to place the final cadence on the dominant. The fact that many of these works were not highly developed would tend to suggest that they were never revised by the composer. Typical of a young composer focusing on his own personal inspirations, Granados concentrated on themes of nature, oriental motifs, exploration of emotions, frequently making use of the salonnier (salon) genre.

Ahti Sonninen composed these three works in cooperation with Vili Pullinen in order to create new teaching material for cello with piano accompaniment. The first two pieces, Prima nota and Partita are easier pieces, and the third, Juvenalia, is a bit more demanding. All pieces offer training in cantilene.

Comissioned by Juvenalia Music Institute for a chamber music competition in 2012, Patikka (Trek) for piano trio (2011) is a perfect chamber music piece for young players. Idiomatic writing and clear, memorable characters create a transparent texture. Kirmo Lintinen (b. 1967) is a man of many musical talents: composer, pianist and conductor. His catalogue encompasses almost all gen-res and categories of composition, from solo work to opera, and he operates with ease from one to another without being a crossover artist; in his case, the versatility is both internalised and innate. He often finds inspiration in French music of the 1920s and its intrinsic musicality. Humour and playfulness are characteristic elements of his music, as are a natural, musicianly approach and an enchantingly effervescent, even tongue-in-cheek texture.
