Sonata WoO postum for Violin and Piano-Edited by Clive Brown and Neal Peres Da C...(+)
Sonata WoO postum for Violin and Piano-Edited by Clive Brown and Neal Peres Da Costa with an Urtext solo part as well as a second part with performance markings.Johannes Brahms The Works for one Instrument and Piano:Johannes Brahms? compositions for one instrument and Piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual playerswho first performed these compositions including Brahms himself. The New Urtext Editions:Bärenreiter?s pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms? works for one instrument and Piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today?s musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources but also a comprehensive approach to the works which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers. In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works. An integral part of Bärenreiter?s Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo rubato rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms? own Piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed. The Violin and Viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations but also with an

revised single edition from HN 38-Johannes Brahms?s piano sonatas opp. 1 2 and 5 were among the first works that the then 20-year-old composer published. Much of the music of the f-minor Sonata is closely connected to Brahms?s visit to Robert and Clara Schumannin Düsseldorf in the autumn of 1853. There are indications that the young Brahms was inspired by Robert Schumann?s Sonata op. 14 which was also in f minor. The music critic Eduard Hanslick also believed that he could discern theinfluence of Brahms?s older colleague when he wrote about the Sonata op. 5: ?The whole of Brahms is here though still under the spell of Schumann?. This revised Urtext edition is based on the musical text of the New BrahmsComplete Edition. The fingerings are by Andreas Boyde and offer the performer highly ingenious solutions to mastering this piano work that is so symphonic in scope.

Johannes Brahms?s Piano Sonatas opp. 1 2 and 5 were among the first works that the 20-year-old composer published. They were composed in 1852/53 although the Sonata in f-sharp minor was apparently the first of the three to becomposed as it was finished by November 1852. This work has a special place in his oeuvre. Besides its passionate atmosphere his contemporaries discerned it to be ?serious and dignified in character?. Brahms dedicated thissonata to Clara Schumann whose husband Robert wrote to the composer that ?Your second sonata my friend has brought me much closer to you?. The ingenious fingerings have been provided by the pianist Andreas Boyde a recognisedBrahms expert.

Arrangement for Piano four-hands-In order to also promote the circulation of his works outside the concert hall Johannes Brahms made Piano arrangements of many of his orchestral works. As the composer he was able to take greater liberties than anyother arranger would have been able to take. And it is precisely due to Brahmsâ creative ideas in the Piano scoring that his arrangements have enjoyed renewed interest in the music world over the past decades.Withthis Urtext edition of the Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4 based on the musical text in the Johannes Brahms Complete Edition our catalogue now contains all four symphonies in the authentic Piano arrangementsmade by the composer. Revised edition of HN 119-In 1879 about ten years before Johannes Brahms composed his late melancholic piano pieces he wrote the two Rhapsodies op. 79 two markedly passionate and comparatively extensive works. In a letter to the convalescent ClaraSchumann Brahms spoke in a typically understated fashion about the two pieces ?with which you can really run riot and test whether the course of treatment has actually had any effect?. We prefer to agree with Brahms? friendElisabeth von Herzogenberg: ?the fact that the g minor is my favourite does not make me insensitive towards the intensely prickly beauty of the one in b minor?. Both of these popular works have now been revised on the basis of thenew Brahms Complete Edition.

a minor op. 114-Johannes Brahms?s late chamber works are surely among the most splendid music ever written for the clarinet. In the last years of his life Brahms seems to have become weary of composing but fortunately for posterity in 1891 hemet the solo clarinettist of the Meiningen court orchestra Richard Mühlfeld whose mellifluous art of performance captivated him and inspired him to new works. The Trio op. 114 is melancholy and autumnal in character and isloved by all clarinettists. It is now available from Henle in a revised edition. Brahms?s manuscript of his op. 114 lies in Munich the home city of G. Henle Publishers. The musical text follows that of the New Brahms CompleteEdition and thus guarantees the highest degree of precision and reflects the current state of research. The pianist Klaus Schilde has added valuable fingerings to this Urtext edition.

Brahms composed his ?Violin Sonata In A Major? during the summer of 1886. The work quickly became part of the standard repertoire and has remained so until today. It is presented here in a fine Bärenreiter Urtext edition and comes with an unmarked Urtext part as well as a second part marked with fingering and bowing by Clive Brown which are based on the practices of Brahms? contemporaries. An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works? origins its compositional process pre-publication performances its publication history as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is theunique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms? death a widening gulf developed between the composer?s expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms? notation with regard to rhythm and timing dynamics and accentuation dots and strokes slurring and non legato Piano pedalling and overholding Piano arpeggiation and dislocation string instrument fingering string instrument harmonics and vibrato. In this way the edition offers an exciting and often surprising insight in Romantic musical interpretation.A pioneering Urtext edition. With an unmarked Urtext part. With a second part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and other contemporaries of Brahms. With an extensive Performance Practice Commentary. For further information on Romantic performance practice we recommend: ?Performance Practices in Johannes Brahms? Many believe that even if Johannes Brahms had not composed his German Requiem the Song of Destiny would still have placed him among the first rank of composers for Orchestra and Chorus. Shorter than the Requiem the Song of Destiny is composed in three movements for SATB Chorus on an unfinished work by Friedrich H lderlin. The work is widely loved and frequently performed and recorded. The Rev John Troutbeck the translator of the German original into English for this edition was a minor canon at Westminster Abbey as well as a gifted linguist who created translations of works for most of the great Choral works of the 19th century. Several of his translations havepersisted as the only English versions of their works for more than a century beyond his death in 1899.

In addition to the well-known exercises there is an appendix with a further 29 studies few of which have been published before.
