For this arrangement of Wiegenlied, Johan Brahms? famous melody was used as the starting point and combined with an alpine horn call. The intention here is not to undermine the original but to pay homage to Brahms? ability to write a ?hit? melody. Brahms Academic Festival Overture was composed in 1880 as a thank you to the University of Breslau which awarded him an honorary Doctorate. The work is a boisterous collection of student drinking songs but not without some of his patented dark melancholy in between sections.Matthew McCrady has beautifully arranged the entire 10-minute work for 12-part Brass Ensemble, Timpani and Percussion, employing the rich sounds from Brahms' composition. For advanced performers, the instrumentation is for:4 Trumpets (2 in C, 2 in B-flat plus Flugelhorn), 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, 2 Euphoniums, Tuba, Timpani and 2 Percussion.

Since its first complete performance in 1868 in the Cathedral of Bremen, Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem is, without question, one of the key works in the history of the oratorio. The reputation of the work is based not only on its unusually concentrated musical structure, but also on the original conception of the text: Brahms assembled important passages from both the Old and New Testaments in Luther's translation so that thoughts on sorrow and consolation would obviously refer to one another. In contrast to many other oratorios of the 19th century Brahms places the choir, the voice of the community, in the center of this interdenominational celebration of the dead. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2705500.
