Par JARRELL MICHAEL. De la nature... du musical Michael Jarrell, né en 1958, est l'un des compositeurs les plus en vue de sa génération. Dans une démarche toute personnelle, qui ne s'est inféodée à aucun mouvement, et dans une quête intérieure inlassablement poursuivie, il a opéré une synthèse de l'héritage des musiques d'après-guerre dont il a extrait certaines caractéristiques techniques pour les mettre au service d'une véritable poétique musicale. En effet, contrairement à ses aînés, il explore moins le langage pour lui-même, faisant des nouvelles techniques le lieu d'une mutation dans la pensée musicale, qu'il ne cherche à le mettre au service de l'expression. Aussi se méfie-t-il d'une conceptualisation excessive, et de l'utopie dont l'oeuvre serait porteuse, préférant mettre en valeur les vertus d'un artisanat qu'il enseigne par ailleurs à Vienne et à Genève, ainsi que lors de nombreux séminaires à travers l'Europe. Ses oeuvres, facilement identifiables dans l'abondante production contemporaine, sont toutes liées les unes aux autres, non seulement par une certaine forme de sensibilité, leur tonalité propre, mais aussi par la récurrence de certains traits que Jarrell retravaille dans des contextes différents. Il s'est ainsi très tôt constitué un univers qu'il ne cesse de remodeler, visant moins l'originalité apparente de chacune des pièces qu'un déplacement constant des perspectives dans lesquelles les mêmes idées, en elles, peuvent être appréhendées. 'Cent fois sur le métier...' voilà quelle pourrait être sa devise. On trouve ainsi dans chacune de ses oeuvres quelque chose de familier qui acquiert en même temps une certaine étrangeté, sentiment qui constitue peut-être un élément essentiel de son expressivité. La musique de Jarrell arpente les régions du rêve et de l'irréalité, à la recherche de son moment de vérité, souvent situé dans les sonorités les plus graves et tes plus lentes, là où le temps, ailleurs agité, s'immobilise. C'est peut-être ce qui confère à sa musique une forme de tendresse inséparable de la beauté sonore, allant jusqu'à un esthétisme raffiné, loin des recherches extrêmes et des formulations autoritaires. Chez lui, même les techniques instrumentales les plus inhabituelles, ou les sonorités électroniques, auxquelles il a souvent recours, sont rapatriées dans un monde sensible emprunt de pureté où ce sont les qualités expressives qui dominent. Celles-ci ne renvoient pas forcément au moi du compositeur, qui tend au contraire à s'effacer, mais davantage à l'essence même du musical, au phénomène en soi, porteur d'une présence singulière au monde. On retrouve de telles qualités dans sa dernière oeuvre, ...Le ciel, tout à l'heure si limpide, soudain se trouble horriblement..., commandée par l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Elle fait appel à un grand orchestre symphonique standard: 3 flûtes (dont alto et piccolo, 2 hautbois et cor anglais, 2 clarinettes et clarinette basse, 2 bassons et contrebasson, 4 cors, 3 trompettes, 3 trombones, tuba, harpe, timbales, 4 percussions (vibraphone, glockenspiel, cloches tubes, cymbales, bongos, tam-tam, grosse caisse, temple blocks, tom grave, spring coils, triangle, mark tree) et cordes. Malgré un titre qui pourrait sous-entendre un élément programmatique, l'oeuvre appartient à la catégorie de la musique pure. L'orchestre y est traité de façon conventionnelle, mais avec une virtuosité d'écriture, un raffinement dans la sonorité qui exige beaucoup de ses interprètes. D'un seul tenant, l'oeuvre se divise en quatre parties principales d'inégale longueur, les deux premières étant plus importantes que les deux suivantes: la première est constituée d'un continuum de notes rapides réparties entre les cordes et Les bois, tandis que les trompettes, doublées par différents instruments, lancent une figure d'appel incisive qui s'allonge progressivement. L'écriture est d'une grande virtuosité, les figurations en triples croches passant d'un instrument ou d'un groupe à un autre. Les notes rapides se figent une première fois dans des oscillations jouées notamment par les cordes divisées, puis à travers des notes répétées qui traversent toute la texture orchestrale. Après un passage intermédiaire privilégiant les sons graves, l'écriture vive reprend jusqu'à un sommet dramatique marqué par des trilles, aussitôt suivi d'une désintégration qui mène à la seconde partie. Celle-ci débute avec des quintes jouées par les cordes graves divisées et colorées par les percussions (les contrebasses, qui doivent modifier leur accord, jouent des sons harmoniques). La musique semble vouloir repartir d'un point originel, elle se réinvente à partir d'une structure élémentaire, dans une extrême douceur. L'impétuosité du début laisse place à une grande délicatesse des sonorités. C'est un trait que l'on retrouve dans de nombreuses pièces de Jarrell: après l'effervescence d'une écriture brillante, agitée, nerveuse, que l'auditeur suit dans sa course folle, vient un moment réflexif et profond, qui nécessite une réorientation de l'écoule, une plongée dans la nature même du phénomène sonore. La trame qui se déploie dans un tempo lent offre ainsi une autre image de la sonorité orchestrale, comme si une musique des origines, au caractère de litanie, était soudain dévoilée sous la couche éclatante du début. Elle donne le sentiment d'avoir commencé bien avant son moment d'apparition, comme si elle provenait des couches profondes de la conscience, d'une mémoire archaïque. D'ailleurs, Jarrell réélabore ici un passage d'une pièce antérieure, Music for a While, lui reprenant son matériau de base. Le sentiment de profondeur est dû au formidable ralentissement du temps, qui nous met soudainement en apesanteur, mais aussi à une forme en spirale, qui tranche avec la musique directionnelle qui précédait. L'effet que provoque la distance sensible entre de tels contrastes est onirique: on ne sait plus si la première partie, qui nous échappe en se projetant vers l'avant, n'était qu'une forme illusoire, ou si nous entrons, avec la partie lente, dans une sorte de rêve éveillé. Un passage central, dans cette seconde partie, s'organise autour de guirlandes sonores à la harpe et aux cloches que tout l'orchestre remplit de sonorités suaves. Les arpèges descendants des vents doublés par des pizzicatos de cordes, que transpercent des notes répétées aux trompettes et aux cors, dans un climat encore doux, annoncent la reprise du mouvement frénétique. Mais cette fois, ce sont moins des figures virevoltantes qui passent à travers les pupitres que des blocs de notes joués par la masse des instruments: des figures qui s'élancent vers le haut aboutissent à des notes répétées, en une forme d'antiphonie, et mènent à un sommet d'intensité. Après quoi, en guise de coda, une quatrième partie nous conduit à une fin mourante: l'harmonie se fige, les polyrythmes annulent toute sensation de mesure, les longues tenues des instruments graves chutent chromatiquement, les percussions jouant des figures rituelles, en résonance, jusqu'à l'immobilité finale. Le titre de la pièce provient de Lucrèce (De la nature). Il n'a pas de signification structurelle immédiate, comme souvent chez Jarrell, mais exprime en quelques mots l'idée qui avait présidé au morceau. Le trouble s'apparente ici à une forme d'étrangeté, à quelque chose d'inquiétant qui n'apparaît pas de façon narrative, tel un vent d'orage dans un ciel serein, mais comme l'essence même de l'articulation formelle entre deux types d'écriture, deux types d'expression qui exigent des temporalités opposées l'une à l'autre. La soudaineté, c'est le renversement entre les deux. Pourtant, on retrouve un même noyau entre les parties vives et les parties lentes, la quinte jouant dans les deux cas un rôle structurel, et le mib apparaissant comme une note polaire (toute la musique de Jarrell est aimantée par des pôles qui orientent l'écoute). Si le passage du limpide au trouble se traduit par la sonorité orchestrale, par le maniement très sensible des timbres qui provient en grande part de la tradition orchestrale française, il se manifeste aussi par des figures qui évitent tout profil thématique, toute forme mélodique au sens traditionnel du terme, et qui composent la texture. L'auditeur a directement à faire avec la matière sonore. Et celle-ci est composée de part en part. L'adjectif poétique vient à l'esprit pour définir une invention qui s'écarte aussi bien des formes illustratives que des constructions schématiques, et qui repose essentiellement sur l'organisation des hauteurs au détriment des effets, des sonorités bruiteuses ou des gestes iconoclastes. Et malgré les passages brillants, malgré les explosions sonores toujours maîtrisées et un maniement virtuose de l'orchestre, cette poétique révèle un caractère fondamental plutôt intimiste. Par JARRELL MICHAEL. J'ai toujours été attiré par la danse et souvent j'ai souhaité écrire une musique de ballet. J'entends par là une musique conçue pour la danse et, si possible, écrire en collaboration avec un chorégraphe. Cette collaboration porterait avant tout sur les questions de forme et de structure. Le ballet de chambre Essaims-Cribles constitue un premier pas dans cette voie. Bien que réalisé sans chorégraphie, il a été conçu pour la danse. Pour cela, je suis parti de la représentation du mouvement, de figures géométriques, de description d'images. Toutefois, ces recettes restent personnelles et pour une création dansée, le chorégraphe conserverait bien sur sa liberté d'interprétation. Je pense néanmoins que la relation avec une musique écrite pour ballet ne pourra pas être la même qu'avec une musique imaginée par le chorégraphe, qui lui plaît et qui l'attire. Je pense que l'échange serait alors plus fort et plus profond. Michael Jarrell Si la voix est absente d'Essaims-cribles, le texte y est quant à lui inscrit: des vers de Patrick Weidmann, poète et peintre, ami de Jarrell, talonnent en effet la partition. Impulsion poétique plus que programme (l'oeuvre est conçue pour le ballet, mais pensée encore une fois en termes de 'mouvement, figures géométriques'), il sert de titre aux différentes parties: ESSAIMS-CRIBLES INHALE D'URGENCE TEMPETE-ARC D'ANGLE S'IMMISCE A PERTE LONGITUDE CURVISME ABATTU TANGENCE FACIALE ENTRE RESSACS ENTAMES APESANTEUR DEFAITE La première phrase du poème, qui devient le titre de l'oeuvre, est aussi une image explicite d'un des procédés d'écriture utilisés par le compositeur: les 'essaims' sont des 'rubans' de notes enchaînées rapidement et en valeurs rythmiques égales (matériau repris au début d'Assonance, pour clarinette seule, et fournissant l'un des multiples exemples de la tendance 'rhizomatique' de l'oeuvre de Jarrell). La répartition statistique des hauteurs dans un ambitus donné - autour de l'octave - rappelle certains procédés utilisés par Ligeti. Le 'crible' consiste à éliminer ces notes pour ne garder que certaines hauteurs, et résulte en une fixation sur des hauteurs privilégiées, matérialisée le plus souvent sous forme de séquences en notes répétées. Intervient alors un jeu de dosage entre 'rubans' de notes et notes répétées. La clarinette basse soliste émerge de cette texture globale à la mesure 13, perçue comme soliste à partir de l'élargissement soudain de l'ambitus dans lequel elle évolue. Les différentes parties désignées par les vers du poème correspondent nettement à des changements de textures et donnent l'impression de répondre également au traitement local de petites structures. A la mesure 49, les rubans seront repris avec une plus grande amplitude pour aboutir à des figures plus irrégulières, plus sporadiques. Au fragment de texte 's'immisce' correspond un solo de clarinette basse où se déploie une belle ligne mélodique aux intervalles tendus, dont Jarrell précise qu'il doit être 'très lyrique'. La section 'longitude' (lettres H à M) constitue un premier exemple de ces passages en suspension qui sont comme une parenthèse hors temps dans le déroulement de la pièce. On y rencontre un alliage de sons résonants, de sons multiphoniques, de jeu de cordes flautando ou en harmoniques, de trilles en multiphoniques à la clarinette basse, de tenues légères aux bois. La fin de l'oeuvre fournit un nouvel exemple de suspension du discours. Si le relatif statisme de la texture sert à ménager dans '...entre ressacs entamés' (lettre T) un arrière-plan sur lequel se dégagera le solo de clarinette contrebasse (mes. 285), le fragment poétique associé à la dernière section ('apesanteur défaite', lettre X) apparaît comme un véritable programme, tant est manifeste la sensation d'échapper à une force de gravité musicale. Le corollaire de cet état d'apesanteur est une impression de débrayage temporel momentané, une échappée hors temps directionnel. Par un jeu subtil de fausses répétitions et de faux repères cycliques - les transformations, qui affectent à la fois le rythme, la disposition harmonique et la présentation mélodique, produisent un paysage toujours changeant -, Jarrell parvient à créer une ambiance hypnotique proche de celle que procure l'observation des lents mouvements d'un mobile. On notera au passage le clin d'oeil discret au thème célèbre du générique de la série télévisée 'Mission impossible' ! La répétition est un des aspects importants d'Essaims-cribles, et elle intervient à plusieurs niveaux. A l'échelle de la forme globale, on peut déceler aux deux tiers de la pièce (lettre R) un retour à la situation initiale, mais sous forme condensée. De même certaines séquences de notes balisent le discours par leur récurrence. A l'échelle locale, on retiendra le principe observable à la dernière page de la partition: une section de quatre mesures reprise ad libitum au moins trois fois, avec un decrescendo progressif. Ce type de fin, assez fréquent chez le compositeur, sera développé dans Assonance V. Par JARRELL MICHAEL. La série des 'Assonances' de Michael Jarrell représente comme les 'Sequenze' de Berio l'idée de cycle, bien qu'elles ne soient pas forcément écrites pour instrument seul. Le compositeur les considère comme ses 'cahiers d'esquisses', 'comme un droit: celui de me concentrer sur une idée et de m'y sentir libre'*. Assonance pour clarinette solo - créé le 22 août 1984 à l'Aspen Festival (Colorado) par Nicholas Cox - est la première de cette série, elle illustre parfaitement l'idée exprimée par le compositeur. On ressent la limitation des moyens musicaux, bien que la virtuosité instrumentale ne soit quant à elle pas vraiment limitée... Michael Jarrell part de quelques éléments de base, telle cette première cellule que l'on va retrouver (au même titre que les autres éléments initiaux) sous différentes présentations: à un tempo plus lent, avec des trilles et des notes intercalées régulièrement ou encore sous la forme d'une reprise variée, très peu de temps avant la fin de l'oeuvre. L'ensemble de la pièce repose sur un réseau très précis de relations entre différents éléments musicaux relevant soit de phénomènes difficilement perceptibles consciemment (comme les précédents), soit, au contraire, de sections bien distinctes les unes des autres que l'auditeur perçoit facilement de par leurs relations d'opposition, de contraste ou de complémentarité. Le retour varié du début fait finalement place à une coda essentiellement fondée sur la dimension polyphonique de l'instrument, qui était sous-jacente depuis le début. L'oeuvre présenta ainsi deux 'parcours' simultanés: l'un, plutôt circulaire, qui revient finalement aux éléments du début après avoir suivi une certaine trajectoire, l'autre qui fait aboutir une idée musicale (la polyphonie) développée régulièrement et progressivement. Assonance illustre bien l'idée de son titre - une forme de rime ancestrale -, mais sa richesse, sa rigueur et sa poésie vont bien au-delà d'un procédé ! Dans Assonance, pour clarinette (1983), Jarrell, à la manière des Sequenza de Luciano Berio, écrit des états instrumentaux qui laissent supposer qu'une seule clarinette suffit à en dévoiler plusieurs. Parti comme souvent d'un motif aux contours sériels, il décline, comme des planches d'architecte ou des esquisses de peintre - idée gouvernant toute la série des Assonances -, des situations amorcées mais jamais terminées où alternent une vision du son qui transite par la virtuosité de l'instrumentiste et une sophistication de l'écriture, plus proche d'une rhétorique de l'ornementation que d'une syntaxe. Mais au lieu d'expérimenter, comme Berio dans la Sequenza pour clarinette, toutes les ressources de l'instrument, Michael Jarrell travaille avec ses virtualités, sans nous montrer ses fonctionnements, occupant l'espace de la partition en se laissant guider par la contrainte du dessin à inventer pour que la clarinette sonne au-delà de sa reconnaissance effective. Jarrell restreint le projet musical il se fixe des règles. En revanche, il multiplie les difficultés techniques, estimant qu'il est inutile de proposer de nouveaux effets si les musiciens ne peuvent les réaliser. L'utopie du timbre s'arrête là où commencent les contraintes de l'instrumentiste. A ce titre, il mélange les catégories: le précis et l'imprécis, le décisif et l'indécis, le fiable et le douteux. Michael Jarrell insiste sur le fait qu'il existe, par exemple, deux genres de sons multiphoniques: ceux entre parenthèses à caractère imprécis, ceux sans parenthèse qu'il faut jouer avec une grande exactitude. La question du même et du différent trouve avec le timbre un écho particulièrement éloquent. Si un mode de jeu, un énoncé rythmique ou une cellule mélodique peuvent signifier tout à la fois une volonté sonore et son contraire, c'est que la syntaxe qui charpente cette esthétique du simulacre est à la fois souple et rigoureuse, intuitive et cérébrale, improvisée et écrite, harmonique et sérielle, etc. Assonance pour clarinette seule est une pièce emblématique, elle représente en raccourci ce mélange de contraintes et de libertés où se façonne l'oeuvre de Jarrell. J'ai souvent dit que la composition était pour moi une expérience éthique. C'est ma manière d'avancer dans la vie, d'essayer de comprendre qui je suis, qui nous sommes et peut signifier la vie. La musique n'est, pour moi, en rien une abstraction !Et, dans la période actuelle, la composition de pièces de grande ampleur m'est difficile. L'écriture de fragments musicaux, de moments musicaux - pour faire référence à Schubert – m'est apparue comme la solution la plus adaptée au temps présent. De fait, ces mouvements sont proches par leur état d'esprit, mais ne forment un ensemble achevé comme pourrait l'être les différents mouvements d'une symphonie, par exemple. J'expérimente, ici, des idées musicales auxquelles je tenais. S'il existe une dramaturgie propre à cette composition, elle serait inversée : les pièces les plus courtes sont au centre de l'œuvre comme une concentration ou une implosion de la matière sonore.Comment se structure la partition ?La première partie s'ouvre par de grands carillons d'une expressivité déclamatoire. Le rythme qui les porte est nerveux et haletant. Ce mouvement continu s'interrompt au centre de la pièce avant de reprendre. Ces carillons reviennent, mais cette fois-ci, ils jouent davantage sur les résonances. Le second morceau repose sur un ostinato rythmique croissant en intensité puis diminuant. Sur cette masse sonore pulsée, le hautbois solo tisse une mélodie traitée dans l'esprit de la variation. La troisième pièce, d'une durée plus courte, ferait songer à une boîte à musique dont la mélodie assez simple et jouée piano est portée par une orchestration complexe. Presque enchaîné avec celui qui précède, le quatrième morceau est tout aussi bref. Il s'agit d'une petite danse. En revanche, le cinquième prend forme dans un tempo très lent, jouant sur les contrastes entre les instruments les plus aigus et les plus graves de l'orchestre. L'écriture virtuose anime le finale. Les arpèges ascendants concentrent de plus en plus les voix vers les registres aigus de l'orchestre.Est-ce que l'orchestration ample de la partition et de format pourtant court, prélude à l'écriture d'œuvres de plus vastes dimensions ?Je ne le pense pas. Je comparerais éventuellement ma démarche présente avec celle du sculpteur Alberto Giacometti. A une période de sa création, il débutait une sculpture de grande dimension - L'Homme qui marche - à laquelle il retirait de plus en plus de matière pour aller à l'essentiel. Il terminait ses réductions qui tenaient parfois dans une boîte d'allumettes ! Pour ma part, je n'éprouve pas le besoin, actuellement, de produire quelque chose de grand au sens de la durée et de l'occupation massive de l'espace, à l'instar d'un Wagner ou d'un Stockhausen. Tout cela ne signifie pas que l'oeuvre d'aujourd'hui n'ait pas quelque influence sur les prochains manuscrits... Allez savoir... / Grand format / Lemoine

La partition fait directement allusion au roman de Michel Butor, et s'inspire de quelques uns de ses principes: modification des différents temps, modification d'une situation en rapport avec une constante, modification de celle-ci, modification de l'itinéraire même du soliste dont l'écriture se transforme peu à peu afin de rejoindre celle de l'ensemble. Michael Jarrell Lorsque je compose, je suis confronté à des choix qui affectent la succession immédiate des événements ou le décours de la forme: une fois un chemin choisi, on ne peut revenir en arrière. En ce sens, la composition ressemble à un système arborescent: un motif, une 'Gestalt' peuvent se développer de différentes façons. Certains éléments d'une oeuvre peuvent servir de germe à une autre oeuvre. C'est ainsi que des liens profonds existent entre les pièces enregistrées ici: Trei I, Trace-Ecart, Modifications (...) Cette idée des notes répétées impliquait d'autres formulations, que je décidai de mettre à jour avec Modifications. J'ai établi dans cette oeuvre une sorte de cycle de développement à partir de deux éléments contraires ayant comme axe principal des notes répétées: ainsi l'auditeur peut-il suivre les transformations allant de la note tenue à des groupes d'appoggiatures, en passant par le trille et différentes sortes de figurations rapides. Ces éléments sont, au départ de la pièce, superposés. Ils ont également une fonction de 'signal', et articulent les différentes parties de l'oeuvre du point de vue formel. Plus qu'un jeu d'écriture, un tel travail est lié aux phénomène psychoacoustiques et à la recherche d'un langage il vise à une formulation que l'auditeur peut saisir, à une adéquation satisfaisante entre langage et perception basée sur l'utilisation d'éléments repérables tels que motifs, hauteurs gelées, gestes musicaux. De même que je n'ai pas l'intention de faire table rase du passé, je ne désire pas construire chaque pièce à partir d'un point zéro. Ce qui importe au contraire, c'est de travailler avec des éléments que je maîtrise de mieux en mieux, d'atteindre à une certaine fluidité, et d'établir une continuité significative entre les oeuvres. Fasciné par des artistes qui, comme Giacometti ou Varèse, travaillent sans cesse la même idée, je conçois mon propre développement comme une sorte d'auto-analyse. La plupart de ses oeuvres récentes pour grande formation mettent en regard, en écho ou en résonance un ou plusieurs solistes et la masse orchestrale. Citons ...prisme / incidences... pour violon et orchestre (1998), Assonance IX pour clarinette et orchestre (2000), le concerto pour piano Abschied (2001), Epigraphe pour accordéon et orchestre (2003), ou encore Sillages, avec flûte, hautbois et clarinette solistes, joué en première mondiale pendant la saison 2005-2006 de l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Sa toute dernière création ...un temps de silence..., met cette fois la flûte seule en vedette. 'Ce n'est pas un concerto à proprement parler, mais un peu plus que les autres quand même !', confie avec malice le compositeur genevois (entretien réalisé par Luca Sabbatini en février 2007 à Genève). 'Bien sûr, il n'y a pas de hiérarchie traditionnelle soliste/accompagnement. La flûte doit constamment trouver sa place. L'orchestre ne joue pas un rôle de faire-valoir, il possède son autonomie. En cela, ...un temps de silence... est plus proche de mon concerto pour piano que de ...prisme / incidence..., où tout venait du violon.' Comme le titre le suggère, la musique de cette nouvelle oeuvre tend vers sa propre dissolution. 'J'ai voulu faire entendre différents types de silence', confirme Michael Jarrell. 'On ne peut les percevoir qu'en variant les contextes. Le silence n'est pas le même après un seul accord ou après une cascade de notes.' Plusieurs idées temporelles d'affrontent. L'une, très pulsée, naît de l'orchestre et se transmet à la flûte. Une autre correspond à 'des moments hors du temps, qui glissent vers le silence'. La virtuosité exigée du soliste atteint des niveaux de difficulté proprement diaboliques. 'Emmanuel Pahud est venu me rendre visite et nous avons travaillé sur ce qu'il était possible de faire à la flûte', raconte le compositeur. 'La partition est écrite sur mesure, en tenant compte des capacités d'Emmanuel.' ...un temps de silence... s'ouvre sur trois accords marqués des cordes, percussion, harpe et piano, qui reviendront trois fois de façon audible, mais orchestrés différemment. Ces accords génèrent également 'l'harmonie fantôme' sur laquelle repose l'oeuvre. L'orchestre installe peu à peu une pulsation régulière, ce qui 'plonge la flûte dans une situation de stress', selon Michael Jarrell. Elle s'accroche, tente de rattraper l'orchestre, court après lui à bride abattue. La subtilité de la mise en place, avec de nombreux échanges ou superpositions rapides entre soliste et orchestre, rend tout le passage périlleux. Un grand tutti introduit la partie centrale, où les protagonistes entrent en symbiose sur un tempo très lent, qui dérive peu à peu vers un 'hors temps' énigmatique. Puis le silence. La dernière partie repart au galop, mais cette fois c'est la flûte qui dicte son rythme à l'orchestre, qui devient l'axe autour duquel tous les autres instruments tournent. L'orchestre finit par prendre le dessus dans ce jeu du chat et de la souris, au cours d'un épisode d'environ une minute, mené à une vitesse vertigineuse. Deux des trois accords du début reviennent, puis se diluent sur un tempo lent, où les percussions, notamment le bongo, dominent. Michael Jarrell cite alors son propre opéra Galilée, créé au Grand Théâtre de Genève la saison dernière: soutenu par trois rins japonais et quelques instruments, un woodblock aigu joue une pulsation régulière, sur laquelle la flûte vient poser ses commentaires. L'harmonie fait du sur place, le temps se fige, comme un arrêt sur image. La musique ne disparaît pas dans le silence. Elle est devenue son négatif, son ombre, son souffle. Assonance III pour clarinette basse, violoncelle et piano se situe essentiellement dans le registre grave pour lequel le compositeur ne cache pas une certaine prédilection - la pérennité des sons de la clarinette basse et du violoncelle est assurée par le piano (couvercle ouvert) placé juste derrière les instrumentistes. Ainsi, en amont de l'écriture, ce dispositif acoustique et instrumental, où le silence a sa part, augure déjà de certains procédés présents effectivement dans l'oeuvre. La pièce s'ouvre sur une figure violente de petites notes rapides et disjointes qui presque instantanément viennent se dissoudre dans les résonances du piano - lesquelles donnent l'illusion de notes tenues. Cependant ce processus, maintes fois relancé et varié, se transforme inéluctablement et bientôt fusent des trilles, des notes répétées, des trémolos de grands intervalles dans des jeux en effet, d'assonance. Une sorte de climax* est atteint à la proportion du Nombre d'Or** (en nombre de mesures tout au moins), point culminant dans lequel la clarinette basse entame une cadence irascible qui très vite se propage aux deux autres instruments. Mais peu à peu, transfigurée en une lente respiration, se rappelle à nous la pulsation initiale et les trois instruments semblent trouver ici un repos. La pièce s'achève en un unisson où, dans la mémoire de l'auditeur, résonnent encore ce que l'on pourrait se risquer à nommer des 'métamorphoses du silence'. * Climax: apothéose, sommet. ** La proportion du Nombre d'Or a la propriété d'être égale au rapport des deux parties inégales d'un tout, aussi bien qu'a celui du tout et de sa partie la plus grande. Le texte est basé sur l'énoncé de deux poèmes Trace et Ecart de Joël Pasquier, respectivement chantés par la voix de soprano et la voix d'alto - texte éclaté, formé également d'interférences d'un trajet vocal sur l'autre et enrichi de citations de deux textes plus anciens, Trace et Ecart de Georges Perec. L'oeuvre s'organise selon deux 'voiles' séparés par une section centrale, sorte de 'trou de mémoire' dans lequel s'engouffrent les sons dans un continuum très long, très fluide 'Essayer de rentrer délicatement dans les sons' puis disparaissent durant deux mesures (géographiquement centrales). C'est dans le franchissement de l'écart, d'un voile à l'autre, que s'accompli le retour à la trace (origine), mais également son oubli. Ces deux mots, au terme de la pièce, s'épousent alors dans leur différence. L'écart est peut-être ce lieu (central et 'vide') où se produit l'oeuvre. 'La couleur du son est donc le grand territoire dont une région est constituée par la hauteur du son. Cette dernière n'est rien d'autre que la couleur du son mesuré dans une direction', écrit Schoenberg à la fin de son Traité d'harmonie. Assonance IV cisèle la réverbération d'un son dans une tessiture et modifie la nature d'un timbre ou d'une couleur par une transformation harmonique, conférant à l'intervalle une fonction structurelle, timbrique et contrapuntique, au sens du contrepoint renaissant note contre note. Prolongeant les premières Assonances, la partition alterne gestes instrumentaux et suspension transparente, éthérée: pervertir le son vivant pris dans l'écho d'un processus électronique, le pétrifier, le fossiliser, mais aussi animer cet écho, la trace du vivant: 'le mort n'est pas nécessairement mort', explique Jarrell. Ainsi, chaque section articule de manière perceptible un principe d'écriture dominant: la figure, conjugaison du geste du tuba ou de l'alto et des possibilités inhérentes à ce geste, et les figurations rapides dans la première, les superpositions de temps différents et les notes polaires de la deuxième, la langueur du chant de l'instrumentiste dans l'instrument et les lignes mélodiques de la troisième, la stabilité harmonique et la désagrégation des figurations rapide irrémédiablement absorbées dans un souffle du tuba et une ponctuation percussive de l'alto dans la quatrième. C'est en réalité beaucoup plus complexe. Titus est peut-être lui aussi un homme aimant, mais il est pris dans un jeu de pouvoir. Sa relation avec Bérénice change au moment où son père meurt : voilà que celui qui avait mauvaise réputation, qui n'était jusqu'alors qu'un guerrier fêtard devient empereur, l'un des plus justes et des plus considérés. Officiellement, il n'aura plus d'histoires galantes, ne mènera plus de guerre et fera plusieurs réformes importantes pour la société romaine. Quant à Bérénice, au moment où cette histoire commence, elle a déjà une cinquantaine d'années. Elle n'est pas une jeune princesse qui serait venue à Rome épouser l'homme qu'elle aime. Son mariage avec Titus aurait été son quatrième mariage. Elle est une femme politique née à la cour. Elle est seule, isolée. Elle a laissé Titus détruire le temple de Jérusalem, scellant le destin de l'Etat hébreu. Elle vit dans une république qui voit d'un fort mauvais oeil cette reine juive - comme le rappelle Phénice : 'Rome hait tous les rois, et Bérénice est reine.' Ici, les mêmes figures se désagrègent, elles ne se laissent plus rassembler, elles revendiquent chacune leur maintenant: dans le premier, l'urgence des notes répétées dans le second, les lentes et mystérieuses lignes d'horizon mouvantes qui si souvent donnent à sa musique son orient (ce sont des pôles qui, comme dans les sculptures magnétiques de Takis, tendent et tirent les lignes à distance) dans le troisième, des éclats, anacrouses ou désinences, on ne sait plus très bien. Mais j'arrête là, c'est déjà trop, c'est déjà faux, l'instant non plus n'est jamais simple, il n'est pas d'un seul tenant, il ne se laisse plus maintenir. Maintenant, les instants et les instantanés se confondent, ils renvoient l'un à l'autre, les lignes d'horizon et les pôles ressurgissent là où on ne les attendait plus, déjà dans le troisième instantané, puis dans le quatrième, le cinquième, le sixième. Dans le septième aussi, qui, pour l'instant, sera le dernier. Et de nouveau, je compte. Alors que le décompte ne sert à rien quand on rencontre 'un pays à dédoublement'. C'est Patrick Weidmann qui dit cela dans le texte de Trei, et c'est encore le long des lignes brisées d'un de ses poèmes que court Essaims-Cribles, ce 'ballet de chambre pour clarinette basse et ensemble instrumental'.
