Relevance in the Choral Art outlines the alchemy of relevance and its role in offering meaningful programs and concerts for today’s audiences. Relevance in the Choral Art is a collection of essays from leading practitioners in the choral field that challenges musicians to reflect on the role choral music plays in today’s culture and what can be done to keep it relevant. Now more than ever we must face the challenge of the relevancy of choral music in our culture, for artistic directors and their role within choral organizations, for members of choral organizations, and for the community that choral music education and performance serves. Tim Sharp along with ten contributing authors explore the idea of relevance and what it means to the choral community, offering wisdom and guidance on a range of topics, including: The alchemy of choral relevance A rubric for achieving choral relevance Programming for choral relevance How to empower minority and underrepresented groups in choral music How to create choral experiences for non-traditional groups, such as those comprised of individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia, cognitive or physical differences, and even those who are incarcerated How to encourage and develop youth leadership in choral organizations When something is relevant it leads somewhere, brings new value, and succeeds in opening a door to something valuable. It gives new information, adds meaning to life, makes a difference, and yields a positive effect. Relevance in the Choral Art provides valuable insights based on research, decades of experience, and practical applications for those looking to revive and grow the relevancy of their work in choral music. Tim Sharp is Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Vice-President of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM), and Artistic Director of the Tulsa Chorale. Kendor continues its tradition of publishing accessible charts that have integrity and style with this cleverly titled original for advancing groups. Set in a warm, contemporary feel, this straight eighth ballad features the pianist on written figures and a flugelhorn soloist that improvises over lush chord changes. Voicings are clearly notated for the pianist and bass lines are provided to assist student players. This piece should be approached like a wind chorale with bucket-muted brass playing smooth legato articulations. Strategically placed dynamic contrasts add to the appeal of this innovative work. A guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is included in each set. Duration 4:50.

This innovative Yasinitsky original showcases trombone soloist throughout. The prevailing ballad style switches to double time swing during the main solo chorus for a refreshing change of pace, and harmonies feature the chord extensions normally found in more advanced charts. Though he provides written solo lines to conform with the requirements of our Konvertibles series, in his score notes Greg urges directors to encourage young soloists to try improvisation. A guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is also included with every set.

Commissioned by the Northern Michigan University Jazz Ensemble, this jubilant tone poem portrays the Great Northern Railway that ran for a century from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. Beginning quietly in the distance, the chart builds steadily through a series of colorful variations and roars by at full throttle five minutes later. The fast swing train groove drops a beat every four measures (4-4-4-3) from start to finish. This is truly a marvel of modern jazz ensemble writing for proficient groups by one of the nation's most innovative composers. Duration 6:00.

At the beginning of the 1980s Alison Moyet was discovered by Vince Clarke, who - in search of greater independence - had left the successful band Depeche Mode. The soulful singing style of Moyet and the electronic, innovative pop that Clarke made melded well together in the group Yazoo with hits such as Only You and Don’t Go. However, after a number of years Moyet went her own way and forged a solo career, during which she demonstrated a somewhat more traditional sound. She recorded several covers (such as The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face and That Ole Devil Called Love) but she also wrote fine songs herself, such as Love Resurrection and, of course, the expressive song AllCried Out. This arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars does justice to the atmosphere of the original song.
