The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Forcethwarted Hitler’s ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK. The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear thesignal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron’s Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs tointercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close. The Way to Heaven is geschreven in opdracht van de Britse Royal Air Force Music Services. The Way to Heaven wurde von den Royal Air Force Music Services in Auftrag gegeben. Mal. MARS (135X180) inches. English-German-French-Dutch.
In 1950, Pope Pius XII selected Marche Pontificale from the OrganSymphony No. 1, by French composer Charles Gounod, as the officialhymn of the Vatican. The first rendition of the official hymn took placein the same year, in Saint Peter?s Square in Rome, played by sevenmilitary bands. To celebrate the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI in2007, Wil van der Beek has produced a first-class arrangement of thisfamous work for concert band. Three stanzas of text are set to the hymn tune ELLACOMBE. An introduction quotes snippets of the tune, followed by stanza one for unison congregation with the brass echoing imitatively. The texture changes in stanza two as the French horn takes the foreground in the accompaniment, with the organ supporting the congregation. The final stanza has the trumpets leaping in baroque-like fanfares at first, then the imitative echoes return. Dignified but joyful, this majestic setting will add to your Easter service.

This work was commissioned for performance at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California. Though specifically designed for the Glatter-Götz / Rosales organ, it is appropriate for any large organ with at least three manuals and a generous combination action memory.
Visión escondida: During the quiet, ethereal introduction, the main theme is presented in short segments by the brass. The first main section reveals the theme intact in the solo organ. Successive thematic statements are embellished by the increasingly elaborate ornamentation. A development section leads to a series of increasingly dramatic fanfares. After a short organ cadenza, the Visión revelada presents the transformed main theme as an accompanied fugue. The dance-like secular nature is underscored by jazz-derived harmonies and insinuating contours, balanced by the scholarly contrapuntal devices.
