The second half of the 18th century, for the people of East Central Europe, was the time of the awakening of national consciousness. The leading force in the Hungarian enlightenment, the lesser nobility, also regarded as important the national character of the country's culture. A valuable kind of national music was the Hungarian dance music that flourished in the 18th century. The greater part of the repertoire naturally perpetuates the 'Hungarian-style' pieces from the previous centuries (appearing in foreign collections too described as hungaricus, ungaresca, saltus hungaricus or Ungarischer Tanz), but beside these we can encounter contemporary European dances and entertaining instrumental pieces in almost every style. The majority of the sources are collections compiled by non-professional musicians and intendedfor private music-making. In this work the composer uses melodies from the 18th-century Linus dance collection, in trioform, with harmonies and bass appropriate to that period. The musical fabric is rich in counterparts, the sound is mademore colourful with many kinds of percussion instruments. The register and rhythmic simplicity of the parts make thepieces easily playable even by music school pupils.picc, 8 fl, 2 ob, 2 fg, 4 cl1 Bb, 4 cl2 Bb, 4 cl3 Bb, 2 cl b Bb, sax a1 Eb, sax a2 Eb, 2 sax t Bb, sax bar Eb - 4 tr1 Bb, 4 tr2 Bb, 4 cor, 4 trb, 2 flic t Bb/C, 4 tb - timp, 4 perc (glsp, xyl, 5 t bl, 2 bongos, cast, ptto sosp, cow bell, trgl, gr c, tamb b).

The title of the suite Early Hungarian Dances from Gömör suggests the arrangement and harmonization of dance tunes, but this three-movement cycle is far more than that: in fact, the old court dances that provide the thematic material have been freely thought through and brought to completion. The composer has breathed new life into the 18th-century melodies, as Zoltán Kodály did with the Galanta and Marosszék dances, Antonin Dvo ák with Slav dances, and Johannes Brahms with those of Hungary. The chief virtues of the work are its colourful, varied instrumentation, the tasteful combination of its archaic style with the musical language of our day, and not least the fact thatits every bar is enjoyable to play and easy to listen to.

Brahms composed 21 Hungarian Dances beginning in 1869. All were composed for piano, but many of them have been orchestrated and are performed by symphony orchestras. They are based on Hungarian folk songs and dances, and No. 5 is the most popular. Standard interpretation includes many tempo changes with the Violin 1 part requiring more advanced technique.

The forerunner of the Bottle Dance was written for the Blue Danube Harmonica Band in the early 1960s. Later, at the instigation of the excellent folk dance choreographer Miklós Manninger, an arrangement for wind band was prepared, in order to widen the ensemble s repertoire of German national pieces by the addition of a Hungarian dance. The production scored a resounding success not only with the audience but also with the musicians who performed in it, with the result that before long the composer prepared from the Bottle Dance an independent work for wind ensemble - a showy piece, virtuosic in its effect yet easily playable. The youth orchestra arrangement is a simplified andshortened version of the work for full-scale orchestra.
