As part of the Hannenheim Edition, the pianist Moritz Ernst also presents, in addition to the anthology of all the surviving piano sonatas of Arnold Schoenberg's master-class pupil, the edition of Hannenheim's two previously known organ works. The early Phantasieis imbued with a late Romantic harmony interspersed with chromaticisms, which reveal influences of Wagner and Strauss, but also of French organ romanticism. More typical of Hannenheim's personal style is the classical three-movement Sonata with its all-pervading serial technique; the last movement presents itself as an extensive passacaglia with 10 variations and is steeped in complex polyphony.

The Fountain Reverie features soft, rippling arpeggios with a contrasting middle section. As with the Festival Toccata, published at the same time, the brilliance of Fountain Reverie disguises the fact that one does not need to be a virtuoso to play it well and effectively, and it plays well on many different Organs.Percy Fletcher was an English composer, conductor and Orchestrator of prodigious output who made his career in the lively world of the London music theatre of the years of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was music director at many theatres, including His Majesty's Theatre for the last seventeen years of his life. He was the Orchestrator and conductorfor the big budget spectacular theatre piece Chu Chin Chow which ran for five years, a record that remained unbroken for forty years. In addition to his myriad works of light music, Fletcher also wrote a serious church cantata, The Passion of Christ, as well as the delightful children's work, The Walrus and the Carpenter.

Born in 1965, Thierry Escaich studied in Paris where he obtained eight first prizes for Organ and Composition. His performances and works during his professional career have also received various distinctions, Three Sketches for Organ being no exception. Composed in 1991, Three Sketches is very modern, exploiting tonality, rhythm, harmony, and many other elements to a virtuosic level. Esciach's is a great improvisation expert and Three Sketches reflects aspects of this through use of complex rhythms and developed melodies. With a typical performance lasting around 11 minutes, the Three Sketches are called, 1) Tournament, 2) Ritual, and 3) Variations on a Memory. For all advanced organists seeking to vary and expand their contemporary repertoire, Esciach's Three Sketches is an exciting addition to the repertoire..

Please note: this edition has nothing to do with Arnold Schonberg! The Schonberg in question is a town near Kronberg in Germany's hilly Taunus region. Around the turn of the last century, the organist Ludwig Sauer (1861-1940) wanted to have a new organ built at his church there and came up with a novel way to finance it: he asked a number of composers to donate a musical piece. He eventually obtained 36 (!) pieces which he grouped together in the Organ Album for the Benefit of the New Organ in Schonberg by L. Sauer and had published in 1900 by Breitkopf & Hartel. Deserving particular mention is Max Reger's popular Introduction and Passacaglia in D minor, which was printed for the first time in that collection and which no doubt helped Sauer's project make organ history. The Schonberger Orgelalbum contains both free pieces and works based on chorales. Thanks to the brevity of the pieces, the book is ideal for use in teaching and in the religious service..

It is no coincidence that the Toccata from Widor's Vth Organ Symphony is his best-known composition. Who can resist its thrilling verve? Not only this, but also the other movements of this unique work of the organ repertoire win you over immediately - the first with its march-like, majestic, much-varied theme; the second with its wonderfully elegiac oboe melody, flowing along over staccato sixteenth notes; and the two slow movements, of which the melancholy, almost static Adagio forms the greatest contrast imaginable to the following triumphal Toccata. The Carus Urtext edition is based on the Paris edition of 1928/29, the last one to be published during Widor's lifetime. The corrections which the composer made after the publication of this edition have also been taken into consideration. As well as this, earlier editions have been consulted for comparison to clarify individual variant readings. Editorial suggestions on the performance of individual passages complete the new edition. Great organ works: Series A: - Symphony II op. 13 no. 2 - Symphony IV op. 13 no. 4 - Symphony V op. 42 no. 1 - Symphony VI op. 42 no. 2 - Symphony Romane op. 73 in preparation Subscription offer for Series A: 20% discount off the retail price.

Widor's early organ symphonies op. 13 have a quite special character because of their suite-like structure. The six-movement Symphony II also combines different types of movement in an unusual way; for example, it includes a Praeludium Circulare, which explores all the twelve keys, a Salve Regina based on the Gregorian antiphon of the same name, and a grand Toccata as the Finale, an interesting precursor of the famous Toccata from the 5th Symphony. The Carus edition is based on the Paris edition of 1928/29, the last one to be published during Widor's lifetime. This publication presents under one cover various short works for sundry orchestral scorings. Larghetto for Orchestra is MacMillan's orchestration (2017) of his celebrated Miserere for a cappella mixed choir (2009), a setting in Latin of Psalm 51, 'Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy', the penitential text famously set in the 17th century by Gregorio Allegri. The Larghetto orchestration was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Manfred Honeck's 10th Anniversary as Music Director. Memoire imperiale is one of a number of variations on General John Reids march tune Old Gaul commissioned from Scottish composers to mark the centenary in 1994 of the Faculty of Music at Edinburgh University. The Faculty was established following a bequest by General Reid (1721-1807), a former law student at the University and a renowned flute player and composer of marches for the BritishArmy, and he asked that an annual concert be organised at which one or more of his compositions be played. Composed in 2012 for the Britten Sinfonia, One is a monody in which a single line is passed around the instruments, painting it with different colours as it emerges and develops. Lasting only a few minutes, its singularity is maintained until blossoming in the lastfew bars. For Sonny (2011, orch 2013) and Ein Lamplein verlosch (2018, orch 2019) are short, private memorial tributes originally for string quartet and here rescored for string orchestra. Hirta was composed in 2016 as part of Deccas The Lost Songs of St Kilda project. Nearly a century ago, the last 36 residents were evacuated from the most remote part of the British Isles, St Kilda, an isolated archipelago off the beautiful and rugged western coast of Scotland. After 86 years, the music of St Kilda was rediscovered, recorded in a Scottish care home by Trevor Morrison, an elderly man who had been taught piano by an inhabitant of St Kilda. The songs were 'reimagined' for the Decca album by various.

About William Walton Edition
In March 2014 Oxford University Press published the last volume in its magnificent William Walton Edition, the only complete critical edition of a 20th-century British composer's oeuvre. All 24 volumes are handsomely printed and bound. Walton's entire output is now available to scholars and performers in a definitive and fully practical edition, based on the form in which the composer ultimately wished his music to be performed. The general editor, David Lloyd-Jones - the eminent conductor, English music specialist, and founder of Opera North - invited a world-class expert to edit each volume. Carefully researched introductory essays place the works in their historical context and in the composer's oeuvre, and there are full critical notes.

Trilogy on B-A-C-H (2017) uses as its musical material a familiar four-note theme: the letters B-A-C-H (the last name of Johann Sebastian Bach) treated as a musical motive: B-flat, A, C, B-natural (H in German note naming). Starting with Bach himself, this theme has been used by a truly enormous number of composers over the centuries. Most B-A-C-H themed works (at least those for organ), tend to be extremely contrapuntal, likely taking their cue from much of Bach's own organ music. This piece explicitly goes in the other direction and use the theme primarily motivically/melodically and as a generating force for the kind of mixed modality that is typical of Cooman's music. The first movement is an energetic march. The second movement is a lyric meditation containing both an arioso and a short quasi-passacaglia, in which the B-A-C-H motive repeats slowly in the pedals. The last movement is a free fantasia: the motive appears both in chorale-like long notes and as a fast, turning figure. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 12' Composed: 2017 Published by: Zimbel Press.
