The music of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) is an important link between the innovations of late Romanticism and the experimentation of the early 20th century. A student of Saint-Saëns, he, in turn, taught Ravel and was a mentor to the young modernists of Les Six. These 12 nocturnes and 12 barcarolles, composed over a span of 40 years, document his move from Romanticism to the frontiers of 20th-century music. Reprinted from authoritative French editions.

Fauré?s 13 Nocturnes form the most significant group of piano character pieces in his oeuvre. Despite their title which places them in the tradition of John Field and Frédéric Chopin Fauré here develops a genre all of his own.These are no dreamy scenes of the night but carefully structured iridescent pieces that alternate between lyrical elegance and passionate drama. Fauré composed the 6th Nocturne in 1894 while spending the summer at the house ofhis parents-in-law. With its strong contrasts of tempo metre and harmony it is by far the most significant and best-known of his Nocturnes. In a letter that he wrote after completing it Fauré wrote: ?Modern piano music that isa little interesting is an extremely rare thing? a state of affairs that seems to have been a good enough incentive for him to enrich the repertoire with his Nocturne op. 63!

Excerpted from the 1st collection published in 1879 Au bord de l’eau and Ici bas bestow an aura of internal reverie on Sully Prudhomme’s simple poems made palp­able by the harmonic refinement and vocal fluidity that constitutes the very essence of Faurean charm.    Several vocal pages selected in the 2nd volume (1897) continue to be favourites: Les Rosesd’Ispahan restored to their dreamy stillness Les Berceaux whose oscillation evokes the swaying of boats and the very nostalgic Clair de lune in which Verlaine’s words set to music for the first time inspired Fauré to write what would become one of his masterpieces: La Bonne Chanson.    From this cycle drunk on lovelorn lyricism the collection retains Puisque l’aube grandit an exalted melody if there ever was one and La lune blanche luit dans les bois a nocturnal landscape in F sharp major – two pearls that distil the same mystery of solace.

Par FAURE GABRIEL. Gabriel Faure 's Nocturnes, nos. 1-8. Gabriel Faure was born in Pamiers (Ariège) on 12 May 1845. Owing to his precocious musical gifts, he was able, at the age of nine, to enter the celebrated Niedermeyer School, founded in Paris to train organists and choirmasters. For about ten years he received instruction of great quality, centred mainly on the study of sacred music and the great classic masterpieces, into which he was initiated notably by Camille Saint-Saë ns, his Piano teacher. As soon as he left the school, Faure began a brilliant career as an organist. In 1896 he succeededTheodore Dubois as an organist at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris, and was appointed professor of composition at the Conservatory, where his pupils included Ravel, Koechlin, Enesco and Schmitt. Meanwhile, he had met Liszt in Weimar and had been initiated into Wagner's art, which, however, never really influenced him. Appointed director of the Conservatory in 1905 after Theodore Dubois' resignation, a member of the French Institute and music critic, Faure spent his last years in solitude, suffering from an irreversible deafness that obliged him to resign from the Conservatory in 1920. He died in Paris on 4 th November 1924. The music of this sometimes misunderstood composer who wrote in nearly all genres (except Organ music) is of great refinement. An enemy of bombast, Faure put his elegant counterpoint, a highly individual harmonic style, unpredictable turns of phrase, and the secret of an unusual musical sensitivity at the service of music that is both varied and of very high quality./ Répertoire / Piano
