Full Circle

Per Nørgård I CHING Programme Note I CHING (1982) for Percussion Solo I. Thunder Repeated: The Image of Shock (hexagram no. 51) II. The Taming Power of the Small - 9 sounds (hexagram no. 9) III. The Gentle the Penetrating (hexagram no. 57) IV. Towards Completion: Fire over Water (hexagram no. 64) I Ching (The Book of Changes) four movements for solo percussion was written in 1982 and dedicated to the Danish percussionist Gert Mortensen. I Ching is the thousand-year-old Chinese oracle book whose 64 combinations of six 'Yang' or 'Yin' lines (bright or dark) represent 64 different states of being for all living things includinghuman beings. The 64 states of being should be thought of as an eternal hidden cycle which lies behind everything that we do: for example the supreme the enthusiastic initiative (combination or 'hexagram' no. 1 the creative) or the despair of the moment the warm and friendly and so on. The states of being exist on all levels - the official the private etc. - at the same time in many speeds. From these I selected four the sequence of which progresses from a situation from which there is apparently no solution to a (temporary) relief. In the first movement ´Thunder repeated the Image of Shock´ a vicious circle of claustrophobic closed circuits is represented by the tom-tom part. This is followed by tam-tams and wood sounds but returns full-circle to the tom-toms. The second movement ´The taming Power of the small´has its origins in the violence of the first movement but this time lets it resolve in a long glide upwards which stars with voice sounds ´borrowed´from the Beatles´´Revolution no 9´which are then transmitted to the other instruments. The third movement is ´The Gentle The Penetrating´in which lyrical poetry dominates with gentle bell-like sounds and delicate tunes. Finally the sovereign many-layered world of rhythm triumphs in the fourth movement: ´Towards Completion. Fire over

For composer Thomas Daniel Schlee the ?intimate sound possibilities of the string quartet? have the potential ?to formulate an albeit ?only? individual solution to the somewhat forlorn condition of new art music within society that we are unfortunately experiencing today.? Schlee?s Fourth String Quartet opens with a pure C major sound out of which he develops a harmonically free band of voices: ?The pure as a source not pleasing?! After a melodically dominating episode and a continuation of the ?swinging tone-motion from the beginning? a thematically solidified section follows. It is met by a second more extensive melodic episode followed by a ?nightly scene?. Coming full circle the opening music of the piece finds its continuation leading into a lament ? first articulated by the ensemble then finally as ?the viola?s long forlorn search for the melody symbolizing a farewell.?

Rejoice: Honoring the Jewish Spirit-Combining the traditions of Orthodox Jewish music with the counter culture of the 1960s Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach created Jewish folk music that reached out to young Jewish seekers. Here Brant Adams has arranged Carlebach's most famous melody for a select Honor choir bringing this music full circle in style and impact.

Phillip Neil Martin's Human Drum for three voices (SSA). Duration: 3 minutes Composed: 2006 Also published as part of UYMP's Songspin Songbook ISMN M 57036 603 3. Human Drum was a collaboration with the Juice Vocal Ensemble. The piece began in the recording studio where I recorded Juice singing notated fragments I’d popped together and also their own improvisations. I then edited and cut up all the audio into very tiny fragments in a myriad of ways to make a short rhythm-based electronic 3 part vocal piece. This forms part of my larger work Voices of the Asylum for voices human beatbox electronics fashion andspace. The final track bares very little resemblance to the original recording studio session. Several weeks after I had finished Human Drum Juice asked me to transcribe the audio so they could sing the piece live (which wasn’t easy to do after all the cutting and processing!) therefore coming full circle! There are now two versions of Human Drum the studio electronic track and the ‘live’ notated version. Human Drum is dedicated to the Juice Vocal Ensemble with affection. First performed by Juice Vocal Ensemble on 3rd May 2007 at York Spring Festival Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall University of York.

Nine pieces for solo guitar-Timescapes brings together nine varied compositions with the aim of broadening the repertoire of the intermediate Guitarist. Three of the pieces were originally written in 1979 as part of a cycle inspired by time and bylandscapes. These have now been integrated with more recent pieces which draw on similar or related ideas. The whole set can be played as a continuous suite with First Light and Beneath The Stars taking us almostfull circle. The pieces can also be performed individually and smaller suites can be created by grouping maybe three or four pieces together.
