J. S. Bach's French Overture In B Minor BWV 831 was published along with the Italian Concerto as the second half of the Clavier-Ãœbung II in 1735. This suite in B minor was originally scored fortwo-manual Harpsichord and is the longest Keyboard suite ever composed by Bach with eleven movements.An earlier version of this work exists in the key of C minor (BWV 831a); the work was transposed into B minorto complete the cycle of tonalities in Parts One and Two of the Clavier-Ãœbung.The term overture refers to the fact that this suite starts with an overture movement replacing the allemande found in Bach's otherKeyboard suites. There are optional dance movements both before and after the Sarabande and another unusual aspect of this work is the inclusion of an extra movement after the Gigue. This is an 'echo' a piece meant to exploit theterraced loud and soft dynamics of the two-manual Harpsichord. Other movements also have dynamic indications (piano and forte) which are not often found in Keyboard suites of the Baroque period.This Henle Urtext Editionhas been edited by Rudolf Steglich and includes fingering by Hans-Martin Theopold.

for Woodwind Quintet-These two extraordinary works of late Mozart KV 594 and KV 608 were both composed to fulfill a commission for a memorial exhibit in Vienna to be played in a “mechanical clock organ.” The term “fantasy” or“fantasia” came to be affixed to these works later and is more descriptive and less cumbersome than the term Mozart listed in his own catalogue “Ein Stüke für ein Orgelwerk in ein Uhr.” They are also variouslytitled “Adagio und Allegro in f für ein Orgelwerk” and “Allegro und Andante (Fantasie in f) für eine Orgelwaltze.”The first of these composed between the monumental String Quintet in D and the Piano Concertoin Bb KV 595 is an A-B-A form comprised of an f minor Adagio opening and closing with a contrapuntal Allegro at its heart. KV 608 is more complicated opening with an f minor section reminiscent of a French Overture followed by a fugue in fminor then an Andante aria followed by a return to the opening and then a more complex version of the fugue.Despite the frustration that Mozart expressed (in a letter to Constanze) with the sound world of these mechanical devices KV 594and 608 are remarkable works which stand at an intersection incorporating what he learned about counterpoint studying at the foot of Bach while looking ahead to the emotional and harmonic poignancy of Schubert.

This Suite was originally written for Flute (or Recorder) and Strings: it is here arranged for Flute and Piano edited by Louis Moyse. It stands out amongst Telemann's work for its cosmopolitan sampling of the various styles of music known to the composer. It contains a pair of French Menuets two Passepieds from Brittany a Polish Polonaise and an Air à l'italienne. For good measure Telemann throws in two quasi-illustrative movements describing Les plaisirs and a Réjouissance respectively. The Overture is perhaps the best-known part of the work and is remarkable for its almost processional feel and itreappears as the Conclusion at the suite's end. This diversity of styles and means fits well the template of a suite but the unifying intelligence behind all of them is definitely that of Telemann.
