French Music for Clarinet and Piano: Clarinet: Instrumental Album

The clarinet method op. 63 by Carl Baermann from 1867 is still a standard work in classical clarinet education today. The thoroughly revised new edition aims at reviewing the educational concept, which is still valid today, for modern lessons, adjusting the music and texts, and sensibly complementing the teaching contents.The editor who draws on many years of experience as a clarinettist in an orchestra and university lecturer of clarinet has succeeded in adapting the valuable teaching material to the requirements of today while maintaining the basic methodology. The result is a total of 7 volumes:Clarinet Method Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (ED 21761, ED 21762)Clarinet Method Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, with 2 CDs each (ED 21761-50, ED 21762-50): The CDs contain the piano accompaniment for the performance pieces, with and without clarinetTune Book 1 and 2 (ED 21763, ED 21764): piano score of the method's performance pieces, with additional inserted clarinet partDaily Exercises (ED 21765): systematic scale, interval and chord exercises in all keys, complemented and published separately from the original methodDue to trilingual nature of all editions (German, English, French), they can be used universally.About the revision:The musical text is based on the first edition of the method. Only a few differences concerning the articulation as well as some misprints and typographical errors were revised. By deleting the historical fingering instructions for the German fingering system, the clarinet method not only has a clean and, compared to the original, more clearly structured layout, but can also be used universally. The content of the text and the performance directions of the original were linguistically modernized and occasionally extended by further ideas from the teaching practice, such as concepts for warming up, breathing exercises, literature suggestions or tips for daily practising. Further additions of scale and triad studies in all major and minor keys make this method a comprehensive and thorough work of study which not only serves as teaching material for young and adult beginners, but is also a valuable compendium of scale exercises and studies for advanced musicians and is ideal for training velocity and dexterity.The Clarinet Method Vols. 1 and 2 contain not only scales and technical fingering exercises but also Baermann's popular performance pieces, like Romanze (No. 14), which are ideal as performance pieces, yet at the same time train both technique and musical expressiveness. The systematic scale, interval and chord exercises in all keys, however, were removed and are published separately in the volume Daily Exercises (ED 21765) for reasons of clarity.The two textbooks are available with or without CDs. The editions with CDs contain two audio CDs each which were recorded live by the editor and which contain a classic audio version of each performance piece as well as a pure piano version for playing along. / Clarinette

Présentation, par Claude-Henry Joubert, du concept des Quatre opéras : Pourquoi des opéras pour clarinette ? Parce que le travail d'un morceau est technique et musical. Et que la musicalité, c'est à la fois la bonne lecture du texte écrit (nuances, phrasés, accentuations, rythmes, justesse, timbre…) et l'expression. Il s'agit d'exprimer, c'est-à-dire de faire ressentir à l'auditeur des sentiments, des émotions, des situations, des caractères… Et l'opéra est une œuvre théâtrale, dans laquelle des personnages se rencontrent, s'éloignent, s'aiment, se combattent, se réjouissent ou se désespèrent. Proposer des opéras pour clarinette, c'est tenter de guider, de faciliter l'interprétation, en donnant aux instrumentistes des pistes (et même des indications précises) sur les personnages et leurs aventures. Présentation, par Claude-Henry Joubert, de la pièce Mam’zelle Fla-Fla : Mam’zelle Fla-Fla est charmante… Elle vivait sans doute vers 1850, elle est très Second Empire, très coquette, comme l'indique son nom – Fla-Fla est un peu synonyme de Chi-chi… Au début elle rêve de valse : les six premières mesures sont un écho du Beau Danube bleu de Johann Strauss. Raoul beau capitaine, est moustachu, évidemment. Comment joue-t-on moustachu ? En dessinant bien précisément les rythmes et les phrasés (détaché robuste, legato velouté), en jouant avec assurance, sans faiblir, le regard fier et résolu. Est-ce que le regard du clarinettiste est important ? Pas important ! nécessaire et décisif ! Lorsque Mam'zelle Fla-Fla est désespérée, c'est tout l'opéra italien qui lui vient aux lèvres. On doit jouer cantabile, délicieusement chantant, comme dans les airs de Bellini ou Donizetti. Le Bal de noces est un French cancan. Les traits de doubles croches sont parfois très difficiles (et très rapides !). Comment faire ? Travailler lentement… Mais aussi, il n'est pas interdit de trouver, avec son professeur, des arrangements, des facilités… Par exemple, mesure 144, il ne serait pas épouvantable de remplacer les huit doubles croches par quatre croches (la sol fa mi). C'est également un vrai travail que cette recherche. Mais attention, ce bricolage n'est pas permis dans les œuvres de Mozart, Beethoven ou Brahms, seulement dans celles de… Claude-Henry Joubert.

Her Concertino for Clarinet and orchestral or Piano accompaniment was first published in 1950 and remains a popular alternative piece in the advanced clarinetist's performance repertoire. Rueff wrote extensively for the Saxophone and Clarinet and her compositions are often used as required contest solos. Concertino is fast and contains complex rhythms. Other appealing musical features include chromaticism triplet motifs and the exploitation of the entire range of the Clarinet. Rueff's Concertino provides a challengingyet riveting piece for advanced clarinetists.

Chant Slave by Joseph Edouard Barat is a piece for Bb Clarinet and Piano inspired by a Slavic tune. Dedicated to E. Capelle a French musician who won the Paris Conservatory First Prize this piece has can be played by intermediate players (difficulty 4°). It features six parts including some variations of the main theme:  1. Moderé (Main theme) 2. Piú Vivo 3. 1° Tempo (Variation 1) 4. Piú Vivo 5. 1° Tempo (Variation 2) 6. 1° Tempo (Variation 3) This piece is really enjoyable and could be perfect for recital orcontests. Joseph Edouard Barat (1882-1963) composed numerous pieces for Wind instruments and Piano accompaniment such as 'Andante and Allegro' or 'Introduction and Dance' among many others.
