First Violin Trios

Though not nearly as well-known as the 'London Trios ' these six delightful divertimentos are Haydn's first pieces of chamber music to expressly call for the flute. Straightforward and full of Haydn's esprit they are a treasuretrove for all lovers of music-making in the home. The stylistic variety of these cheerful pièces d'occasion surely reflects the fact that they are partly based on earlier models: Haydn's baryton trios as well as arias and otheritems from his opera 'Il mondo della luna' ('The World on the Moon').

This lovely collection of original violin trios was compiled by Rubank legends Harvey Whistler and Herman Hummel and is still in use on many state contest lists. Each is the perfect length for competition. The programmatic titleschosen by the editors describe each piece's innate style: Trio Brillante Trio Caprice Trio de Ballet Trio Elegante Trio Impromptu Trio Pastorale to name a few out of this collection of 25.

Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Since their publication in the New Mozart Edition, Mozart's sonatas K. 10–15 count as piano trios. Furthermore, the title of the first edition, published by father and son Mozart in 1765 reads 'Six Sonates pour le Clavecin qui puevent se jouer avec l'accompagnement de Violon ou Flaute Traversiere”. In other words, these pieces are harpsichord sonatas that may be accompanied at will by a violin or a transverse flute. In a partial press run of the first edition a cello part was included. Our new edition is the first to take these conflicting formats into account by presenting two separate versions, one being the unaltered harpsichord part, the other a full score with separateinstrumental parts for violin/flute and cello. The harpsichord part [CV 51. 010/10] is indeed capable of standing by itself and requires no instrumental expansion. The melody instrument, in contrast, merely function as an accompaniment or contribute brief interjections, or, in the case of the cello, reinforce the left hand of the keyboard. In other words, K. 10–15 are not only Mozart's earliest piano trios, they are also his earliest keyboard sonatas to survive intact./ Répertoire / Violon, Violoncelle et Piano

Max Reger's two String Trios stand alongside Mozart's Divertimento in E-flat major (K. 563) and Beethoven's Op. 9 trios at the pinnacle of the genre. In their style and technical demands Regerhas clearly taken these admired classical forebears as his guide. Both trios are classicist in nature and delight the listener with their relaxed and occasionally even joyful character. No wonder that they proved highly successfulat their premières in 1904 and 1915! For his edition the Reger specialist Michael Kube has examined the autograph scores and the first editions of both works. This edition in parts also comes in a miniature score withexactly the same text published in Henle's Study Score Series (HN 9722).

Viennese music has become almost synonymous with Johann Strauss II and his great waltzes. But of course there were other luminaries: his father Johann Strauss I his talented brothers Josef and Eduard as well as their colleagues friends and rivals. This collection includes music by some of these; and apart from waltzes we have polkas (slow and fast) a couple of melodies from operettas and a march. The selection ranges from shorter eminently playable miniatures to a handful of more extended and challenging arrangements. The waltz kings were first and foremost fiddlers. They led their orchestras from the front instrument and bow in hand. As a young man JohannStrauss II used to practise his Violin in a full-length mirror so he would look every inch the part. They knew how to write for the Violin how to make it sing and dance and this helps to make the repertoire a perfect foil to the other volumes in this series. Full score for Violin Cello and Piano of Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No.1 In D minor Op.49 and Piano Trio No.2 in C minor Op.66. Upon hearing the first trio Robert Schumann declared Mendelssohn is the Mozart of the nineteenth century!
