First Lessons Bass is intended to introduce beginning students to the fundamental concepts of playing the electric bass. The material covered in this book is approximately the material covered in the first 8 lessons of private bass instruction. This book makes use of the 3-finger left hand position commonly found in double bass technique. The emphasis on left hand technique allows the student to develop a consistent fingering approach to the fingerboard, reduces unnecessary strain on the left hand, and makes the bass more accessible to younger students or students with small hands. After the left hand technique has been established, the book introduces the student to important elements of bass line construction including blues patterns, the root-fifth relationship, and common rhythmic patterns. Includes access to online audio and video.• Introduction for beginning students to the fundamental concepts of playing the electric bass.• Book is approximately the material covered in the first 8 lessons of private bass instruction.• Makes use of the 3-finger left hand position commonly found in double bass technique.• Offers student important elements of bass line construction: blues patterns, root-fifth relationship, and common rhythmic patterns.• Includes access to online audio and video.

This children’s album by renowned Czech composer-guitarist Lukáš Sommer reflects the latest trends in playing and teaching the guitar. It is suitable for the first three years of lessons. Some of the pieces have even been performed by children and young guitar students at competitions and concerts in Europe. Each of these little programme pieces is written in a different style with brief explanations of its technical features. Several are composed in an open-ended form that allows players to define the rhythm or to add an accompaniment on open bass strings. In this way the author grants leeway to the learners’ creativity and stimulates their musical imagination. The pieces are easy to play and the edition comes with attractive illustrations.

The present pieces are intended to help the teacher position playing at an early stage. Having tackled two-part playing with open bass strings n first and second positions, it is possible to attempt two-part playing with open strings in higher positions (without changing position), without encountering technical difficulties. The book concentrates on the most commonly used positions (I-V, VII) and offers two pieces in each position. The song Happy Birthday also requires the ninth position. The exact range of the appropriate position is given above each piece. In the pieces themselves, fingering indications have been avoided to eliminate the danger of relying upon them. The right hand can play apoyando throughout. The addition of a second guitar part (of the same technical standard as the first) makes this book suitable for group teaching as well as for individual lessons. All the pieces may be played as solos (upper part) or as duets. The range of musical styles extends from baroque to folklore and blues and will therefore suit the various preferences of guitar students.
