for Piano Violin and Horn (Viola / Violoncello)-This Trio’s unusual scoring for horn violin and piano prompted speculation early on about a possible background to it that had no connection with music. Brahms’s biographer Max Kalbeck saw in it a lament for thecomposer’s mother recently deceased to whom he had supposedly played folk songs on the horn in his childhood. There is no doubt that Brahms loved the sound of the natural horn and bestowed several of his most inspiredmelodies on the instrument. Horn players justifiably adore this Trio op. 40 and this Henle Urtext edition now offers an optimal basis for studying and performing this masterpiece. This edition follows the musical text of the NewBrahms Complete Edition and thus guarantees the greatest fidelity to the sources and reflects the current state of research. The pianist Klaus Schilde has added helpful fingerings to the piano part. Extra parts are also providedfor the alternative scoring authorised by Brahms (with viola or cello instead of horn).

The present volume is an updated edition of Series IV, Volume 6 of the ?New Bach Edition? (NBA), prepared by Dietrich Kilian in 1964. The discovery of new sources and a reassessment of existing handwritten copies have brought about changes to the contents of the volume, which now includes the ?Fantasia in C minor? (BWV 1121), the ?Fantasia in G major? (BWV 571), the ?Fugue in G major? (BWV 577) and the C major version of the ?Toccata and Fugue in E major? (BWV 566). On the other hand, the ?Prelude in G major? (BWV 568) as well as the alternative versions of the ?Fugue in C minor? (BWV 574a) and the ?Prelude in A major? (BWV 536a) have been discarded as presumably spurious. Besides the new compilation and corrections of the musical text, the volume also contains a detailed Foreword by Peter Wollny with observations on each work and the extant sources. Organ Chorales from the Neumeister Collection-Organ Chorales from the Neumeister CollectionYale University Manuscript 'LM 4708'In 1985 Christoph Wolff working at Yale University discovered a collection of 82 chorales compiled by Johann Gottfried Neumeister (1756-1840) which contained 38 compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. The writer Charles Marie René Leconte born on the French island of La Réunion published his literary works under the nom de plume Leconte de Lisle ('the Count of the island'). His poem Nell a poetic vow of eternal fidelity to the beloved was written in 1852 and set to music by Gabriel Fauré in 1878. Long vocal phrases unfold over continuous sixteenth-note figurations in the piano which combine emphatic depictions of nature and affirmations of love both in text and music. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by alarger ensemble without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD 'Kennst du das Land ...' (Carus 83.495).
