The German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Academic Fesival Overture in the summer of 1880, together with the Tragic Overture. The occasion was the honorary degree which Brahms had received a year before from the University of Breslau. Initially, Brahms had sent a thank-you note, but he was expected to express his gratitude with a composition. The premiere took place on 4 January, 1881 - conducted by the composer himself - in Breslau. For this sparkling work, Brahms used various German student songs as a basis in an inventive way - and a little jestingly. Owing to the accessible development, lyrical warmth, humor, and persuasiveness, the Academic Festival Overtureis still a popular concert work. This transcription for concert band, which has been written by Tohru Takahashi, does justice to the original composition.

Voor dit sprankelende werk gebruikte Brahms op inventieve wijze - en een tikje schertsend - verschillende Duitse studentenliederen als basis. Dankzij de toegankelijke opbouw, lyrische warmte, humor en meeslependheid is de AkademischeFestouvertüre nog altijd een geliefd concertwerk. Au cours de l’été 1880, le compositeur allemand Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) écrit son Ouverture pour une fête académique, op. 80. Elle est contemporaine de l'Ouverture tragique qui en est son pendant. Un an auparavant, Brahms avait été fait docteur « honoris causa » de l’Université de Breslau. Dans un premier temps, il se contenta d'une simple note manuscrite titre de remerciement, mais comprit rapidement que cela ne saurait suffire. Il composa donc l’Ouverture pour une fête académique en remerciement pour sa nomination. L’œuvre fut créée l’Université de Breslau, le 4 janvier 1881, sous la direction du compositeur. Sorte de fantaisiepétillante et inventive, l’Ouverture académique est constituée de plusieurs chansons estudiantines allemandes en vogue l’époque. En raison de son développement accessible, riche en expressivité, espiègle et lumineux, cette ouverture reste très largement appréciée de nos jours.Cette transcription pour Orchestre d’Harmonie signée Tohru Takahashi est fidèle l’œuvre originale.

Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning ‘Lion City’. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun!

Der Name dieses Werkes spielt auf den Löwen, das Wahrzeichen der Stadt Singapur, an. Philip Sparkes Komposition ist in der ABA-Form eines flotten Marsches geschrieben. Eine Eröffnungsfanfare führt zu einer munteren Marschmelodie, die vom gesamten Blasorchester aufgenommen wird. Dann kündigt ein Tonartwechsel den legato gespielten Trioteil an, bevor das Hauptthema in veränderter Form zurückkehrt. Löwenstark!

Singapura (du sanskrit singa, lion et pura, ville) est le nom malais de l’île de Singapour. Le symbole de cette cité-État est un animal tête de lion et au corps de poisson, le Merlion. Il garde l’embouchure du fleuve Singapour. Lion City Festival est une marche rapide, structurée selon la forme ABA. La fanfare d’ouverture chemine vers un air de marche, vif et gai, interprété par l’orchestre entier. Un changement de tonalité annonce le trio. Les lignes sont jouées avec le phrasé fl uide du legato, puis laissent la place au retour du thème premier, réexposé dans diverses formes.

Singapura è il nome malese dell’isola di Singapore. Il simbolo di questa citt -stato è appunto il leone. The Lion City Festival è una marcia rapida strutturata nella forma ABA. La fanfara di apertura accompagna una melodia di marcia gaia e vivace interpretata dall’intero organico. Un cambiamento di tonalit annuncia il trio, prima che il tema principale ritorni in forma diversa.

Dedicated to the North American Brass Band Association, this is music that is full of energy and dynamic extremes. In form it draws from the overture style, although the themes are self-existing and the piece is programmatic. Working well asa festival opener, it sets a mood of excitement. Following the rhythmic fanfares of the opening, the first theme is presented in the cornets followed by a return to the same rhythmic material. A second theme appears in the horn section and isdeveloped, changing into a darker and sinister form of the same motif. Eventually a Maestoso section is reached, full of sustained block chords in the cornets and trombones, as the rest of the band counters with cascading lines that weavestraight through the brighter instruments.

Dit levendige werk vol dynamische uitersten is opgedragen aan de North American Brass Band Association. Qua vorm is het geënt op de ouverturestijl, hoewel de thema’s op zichzelf staan en het een programmatische compositie betreft. Het is heelgeschikt voor de opening van een festival, want het creëert een enthousiaste, verwachtingsvolle stemming. Na de ritmische fanfares van de opening wordt het eerste thema gepresenteerd in de cornetten, gevolgd door een terugkeer naar hetzelfderitmische materiaal. Auf den Fanfarenrhythmus der Einleitung folgt das erste Thema, das von den Kornetten vorgestellt wird und schließlich zumursprünglichen rhythmischen Material zurückkehrt. Das zweite Thema wird von den Hörnern gespielt und weiterentwickelt, wobei das gleiche Motiv in eine dunklere und unheimlichere Stimmung wechselt. Danach erklingt ein Maestoso-Teil mit Akkordblöckenin den Kornetten und Posaunen, während das restliche Orchester kaskadenartige Melodielinien spielt, die sich durch die helleren Instrumente schlängeln.

Dédiée la North American Brass Band Association, cette œuvre est pleine d’énergie et de dynamiques extrêmes. En dépit de sa forme d’ouverture, les thèmes ne sont pas liés et l’œuvre est programme. Convient comme pièce d’ouverture defestival et crée une ambiance d’enthousiasme. Suite aux fanfares rythmiques du début, le premier thème est présenté par les cornets piston, suivi par un retour au même matériel rythmique. Un deuxième thème apparaît dans le registre des cors et estdéveloppé, se changeant en une version plus sombre et sinistre du même motif. Finalement on arrive une section de Maestoso, qui contient de nombreuses double-cordes soutenues chez les cornets et trombones, tandis que le reste de l’ensemblerépond par des lignes descendantes qui se tissent travers les instruments plus aigus.

Mi-Chi-Bi-Ki“ ist der Name einer Bronzestatue, die in der japanischen Stadt Yokohama steht. Dieses Denkmal, das als Symbol für den Frieden auf der Welt errichtet wurde, inspirierte den japanischen Komponisten Satoshi Yagisawa zu diesem Werk. Ein glanzvolles Eröff nungsstück, das die Herzen der Zuhörer auf der ganzen Welt öff nen wird!

Chaque année, la ville de Yokohama célèbre une fête particulière, le “Yokohama Kaikosai”, la date anniversaire de l’ouverture du port maritime qui permit le développement de la ville. L’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Yokohama (Yokohama Wind Symphony) fut spécialement créé en 2006, pour participer au Concert de Bienfaisance « Autour du Brass Band » organisé par l’Association The Brass Cruise. L’objectif de cette formation ad hoc est d’encourager et de soutenir l’activité culturelle de la population et de promouvoir la musique japonaise pour formations vent ayant ses racines Yokohama. Le Yokohama Wind Symphony est devenu un élément essentiel du festival. Il est constitué de plus de200 musiciens tous recrutés publiquement. En 2007, le compositeur Satoshi Yagisawa répondit favorablement l’invitation de l’orchestre dont il fut le chef invité. cet effet, le comité de l’Association The Brass Cruise lui commanda une œuvre de circonstance. Satoshi Yagisawa composa une fanfare brillante qu’il intitula Fanfare Mi-Chi-Bi-Ki(d’après le nom d’une statue en bronze de Yokohama). L’œuvre fut donnée en création mondiale en ouverture du concert 2007. l’instar de la statue qui l’a inspirée, la fanfare exprime le désir d’un monde meilleur, un monde de paix.

En septembre 2018, le guitariste Toby McWilliams a commandé à Cruz l’écriture d’une pièce solo en trois mouvements après avoir entendu ses Five Pieces in C dans l’émission de radio internationale Classical Guitar Alive. McWilliams a demandé que le premier mouvement soit en forme sonate-allegro, suivi de deux autres pièces reflétant les choix de tempo d’une sonatine en trois mouvements typique. Comme c’est le cas pour la plupart des œuvres de Cruz, cette Sonatine a été achevée en tant que musique pure, sans programme sous-jacent. Cependant, dans sa quête de trouver des titres autres que des indications de tempo, Cruz a extrait trois mots de la correspondance entre lui-même et McWilliams qui, ensemble, ajoutent une touche personnelle à la collection tout en suggérant une progression des événements d’une journée imaginaire.

Un point d’intérêt dans le premier mouvement, le thème A : Cruz commence sur l’accord IV et évite intentionnellement d’utiliser un accord I tout au long de la pièce. Bien que la section B commence dans la tonalité de dominante, elle se dirige rapidement vers un centre tonal de ré majeur.

Festival (3ème mouvement) utilise un thème d’ouverture bitonal : mi majeur dans la voix supérieure tandis que la ligne de basse utilise mi mineur.

In September of 2018, guitarist, Toby McWilliams commissioned Cruz to write a three-movement guitar solo after hearing his Five Pieces in C on the internationally syndicated radio show, Classical Guitar Alive. McWilliams requested the first movement to be in sonata-allegro form followed by two other pieces that reflect the tempo choices of a typical three-movement sonatina. As is the case with most of Cruz’s music, this Sonatina was completed as music written for music’s sake. However, in his quest to find titles other than tempo markings, Cruz plucked three words from the correspondence between himself and McWilliams that together, add a personal touch to the collection while suggesting a progression of an imaginary day’s events.

A point of interest in the first movement, A theme: Cruz begins on the IV chord and intentionally avoids using a proper I chord throughout. While the B section does begin in the dominant key, it moves quickly towards a D major tonal center.

Festival (3rd movement) uses a bitonal opening theme: E major in the top voice while the bass line uses E minor.
