Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: String quartets op. 44, 1-3

String Quintets op. 18 and 87-The genesis of Mendelssohn?s String quintets is closely connected to his friend Eduard Rietz and the latter?s brother Julius. Deeply affected by Eduard?s death in 1832 Mendelssohn exchanged the ?Minuetto?movement in his A major Quintet Op. 18 written six years previously for a newly composed adagio. It was in this form that the work was finally sent to the publisher. The Quintet in B flat major was onlypublished after Mendelssohn?s death; numerous unauthorized entries by Julius Rietz thus found their way into performance practice. An examination of the autograph allowed us to return the work to its original form thecommentary contains detailed information on this.

Le quatuor à cordes est généralement considéré comme le genre de la musique de chambre de la période classique par excellence: inventé par Haydn développé ensuite avec Mozart et déjà porté à son apogée par Beethoven. Tous les quatuors des compositeurs ultérieurs durent se mesurer à l?aune des ?uvres de ces trois maîtres. Cela est tout particulièrement vrai pour Men-delssohn qui fut toujours considéré comme un «classique romantique». On dit d?ailleurs sou-vent de son quatuor en la mineur op. 13 qu?il présente des accents beethoveniens particulièrement prononcés. Mendelssohn composa ce quatuor à la fin de l?été et au cours de l?automne 1827 soit peu après la parution desquatuors tardifs de Beethoven dont il avait certainement eu connaissance. Le quatuor en Mi bémol majeur op. 12 vit le jour deux ans plus tard lors de son premier voyage en Angleterre.
