Fanfare for the Hunt

These eight little solos are intended to supply easy, descriptive pieces for the beginner horn player which are not only beneficial for technical development but will also be useful performance material. The tunes are characteristically horn-like in nature.

A Huntingdon Celebration ist eine kurze, lebhafte Ouvertüre. In dieser abwechslungsreichen Komposition erscheinen verschiedene Themen und Phrasen einmal in einzelnen Instrumentengruppen, dann spielt wieder das gesamte Blasorchester. Die Fanfare der Eröffnung rundet schließlich ein Werk ab, mit dem Sie Ihr Ensemble von vielen Seiten präsentieren können. So setzen Sie Ihre Musiker ins rechte Licht!

L’Orchestre d’Harmonie du Comté du Huntingdonshire, situé dans l’Est de l’Angleterre, a été fondé en 1993. En 2001, les musiciens invitent le compositeur Philip Sparke, pour un week-end de travail consacré ses œuvres. De cette collaboration chaleureuse, naît l’idée de passer commande d’une pièce pour le 10ème anniversaire de la création de la formation, célébré en 2003. Philip Sparke leur compose A Huntingdon Celebration.Cette ouverture courte et vive débute avec une introduction écrite en forme de fanfare qui s’inspire du thème principal, exposé, dans un premier temps, par les clarinettes et les saxophones, puis par l’Orchestre d’Harmonie en entier. Cuivres et boisétablissent une conversation musicale qui mène l’introduction d’un second thème tout en legato, sur un accompagnement bouillonnant en croches. Le passage central, plus lent, développe un choral dans les registres ténors. Le tempo premier revient ensuite et le thème initial est exposé nouveau, amorçant la reprise de la fanfare d’ouverture qui vient conclure l’œuvre sur une note brillante.

Questo breve e vivace brano d’apertura è ideale per iniziare un concerto. L’incipit è scandito da un tema in stile di fanfara eseguito dai clarinetti e dai sassofoni, sostenuto dall’intera banda. Dopo un corale centrale più lento, ritorna il tempo originale seguito dalla fanfara d’apertura che riappare portando il brano ad una trionfale chiusura.

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante” in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.

Het tempo van deze mars is statig en de thema’s zijn concertant van karakter: Artemis is dus eerder geschikt als concertmars dan als loopmars. Technisch is dit werk niet erg lastig om spelen, al wordt af en toe wel wat vingervaardigheidvereist. De triomelodie is echter uitgesproken lyrisch en biedt diverse secties binnen het orkest de mogelijkheid om zich melodisch en expressief te etaleren. Een aangenaam klinkende en prima speelbare concertmars!

Artemis ist die griechische Göttin der Jagd und der Wälder. Jan Van der Roost ließ sich zum wiederholten Male von der griechischen Mythologie inspirieren und komponierte diesen Marsch mit gemäßigtem Tempo und konzertanten Themen. Obwohl technisch nicht sehr schwer, erfordert er doch stellenweise etwas Fingerfertigkeit. Der Trio-Teil ist jedoch besonders lyrisch und bietet verschiedenen Registern des Blasorchesters die Möglichkeit, sich in Melodie und Ausdruck zu beweisen. Kurz gesagt ist Artemis ein ausgezeichneter und gut spielbarer Konzertmarsch, der viele Blasorchester anspricht.

Artémis est la déesse grecque de la nature sauvage et de la chasse. Dans l’art occidental, elle est souvent représentée armée d’un arc et de flèches et entourée de cerfs, de lions et d’ours. Évoluant sur un tempo majestueux et développant des thèmes au caractère concertant, Artemis s’inscrit pleinement dans la lignée des grandes marches de concert. Hormis quelques passages nécessitant une plus grande souplesse des doigts, elle ne contient que peu de difficultés techniques. Artemis est une pièce brillante qui convient au plus grand nombre d’Orchestres d’Harmonie.

Ad eccezione di qualche passaggio che necessita una maggiore scioltezza delle dita, il brano contiene solo poche difficolt tecniche. Artemis è un pezzo brillante adatto alla maggior parte delle bande.

This short and lively overture opens with a fanfare-like passage based on the main theme, which soon appears on clarinets and saxophones and is then taken up by the whole band. Answering phrases between brass and woodwind lead to a second legato theme over bubbling eighth notes. This in turn leads to a slower central chorale in the tenor register of the band. The original tempo returns and, after a period of thematic development, the main theme reappears until the opening fanfare returns to bring the piece to a close.

This Karl King gem was written during King’s days as a trouper with the circus, and it really shows! A brass fanfare is followed by two magical strains which are unmistakable King-tunes, and the trio shows influence of ragtime, which was the great musical craze of the time. Embellished with a delightful piccolo solo (but not too difficult!) this wonderful King classic will bring the house down!
