Aggression, despair, but also hope for peace can be clearly heard within this work. In Banja Luka Jan de Haan reflects aspects of the former Yugoslavia, stricken by a civil war which brought terrible suffering to the people of this area. Banja Luka was written for the International Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands.

A brilliant opening fanfare by trumpets and trom bones is followed by the primary melody utilizing the low brass and low woodwinds as melodic instruments. This melody, in different forms and voicings, alternatives with the fanfare throughout, providing harmonic, rhythmic, and orchestration variety that is refreshing, and somewhat unusual in a work which is playable by young bands of even limited instrumentation.

Bring your trumpets out front and let them herald in the holiday season, starting with a fanfare that leads into a fun, swinging version of this well known carol. It's easy to work up, and it's playable with limited instrumentation so it will sound fine with as few as 2 trumpets. After playing through the tune, the bones, bass & bari get a fun riff going. Then the saxes and trumpets trade twos over it. This leads up to a key change and the trumpets lead the way to the end. No solos.

This infectious arrangement uses the old spiritual This Train is Bound for Glory as a boogie style feature with the trombone section as soloists. The train can hardly stay on the rails because the coaches can’t stop dancing! Along the way see how many other famous train references you can hear. A fantastic piece that’s great fun to play. This Train is Bound for Glory.
