This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the ‘Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare’ (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the ‘Sint Martinusfanfare’ from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin, a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin, who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement, the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. Thecontrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement, Allegro Molto Vivace’, could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis, the crown on the pastoral work of Martin, Bishop of Tours, Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle.

Jan van der Roost’s new work Jubilus will make an ideal opening piece for any event. It is in a classical ABA form, beginning with a rising brass fanfare which is quickly replaced by a contrasting expressive lyrical theme. The two themes alternate for a few seconds until an exciting new atmosphere is created with the lively allegro. This eventful piece lets you show off many aspects of your player’s style and technique without losing overall unity Jan Van der Roosts Werk Jubilus! ist eine ideale Konzerteröffnung.

Jan Van der Roost and the commissioner of this work have strong personal ties, making By the River a very personal work for both of them. The first part is pastoral and describes the rural character of what is actually an industrial region. The next movement, a dynamic allegro that creates an exciting contrast to the first. All instruments are put to good use, letting everyone have their moment in the limelight. All the interesting thematic and melodic elements Van der Roost creates will keep the audience engaged through to the very last note! Hierdoor is By the River een zeer persoonlijk en indrukwekkend werk geworden. Votre attentif auditoire en restera époustouflé !By the River è un’opera alla quale Jan Van der Roost è particolarmente affezionato.

Fanfare: Generation Next Fanfare: Generation Next is a piece I wrote in honor of Mr. Dean Zirkle, long-time director of bands at Camp Hill Senior High School (near Harrisburg, PA). I had been working as Dean's marching band arranger/composer for eleven years when he announced his upcoming retirement, and I felt compelled to write a piece to pay tribute to his remarkable contributions to music education and to the lives of his students and colleagues. The piece is built on two primary ideas. The first idea is a musical rendering of the name Dean. D, E, and A are all musical notes, but N is not. I have chosen to use a neighbor tone (a note a half-step above or below a given note) to finish off the name. (MUSIC EXAMPLE) This melodic idea occurs throughout the composition in a variety of transformations. Sometimes it is presented with the exact notes shown above; sometimes the interval structure is maintained, but the pitch series is transposed (G-A-D-C#, for example); sometimes the four notes are played in order, sometimes out of order; sometimes the first three notes (D-E-A) sound together as a chord; etc. (MUSIC EXAMPLE) The second idea is a rhythmic motive, established in the opening brass fanfare. (MUSIC EXAMPLE) This rhythm is later transformed to the accent pattern shown below, which is used as an ostinato throughout much of the allegro section of the piece.  .Fanfare: Generation Next Fanfare: Generation Next is a piece I wrote in honor of Mr. Dean Zirkle, long-time director of bands at Camp Hill Senior High School (near Harrisburg, PA). There is no greater virtue befitting to Mankind than faith, which manifested, doth friendship firmly bind. This verse was written by Simon Dach, the leader of the Konisberg circle of poets, during the Thirty Years' War, and a little later was set to music by Heinrich Albert. The anxieties and tribulations of the period are reflected in the songs and make it particularly applicable to us as survivors of the strife and disorder of our own day. Thus, Harald Genzmer has adopted it as the cantus firmus of his Prologue for Orchestra, in which we are reminded of it throughout, in its original form, in inversion, fanfare introduction, funeral march, intermezzo and final allegro.
